Guess they are finally valuing their service quality at zero dollars!! Having unfortunate experience of being a sprint customer, I wholeheartedly concur with the valuation of their service.

Hi! I have ten specific questions that only pertain to my individual circumstances. I epitomize laziness and my sense of entitlement is impervious to reason. Therefore it is the responsibility of anyone and everyone who reads this to find the answers to my questions.

i know. but i mean for this sprint deal will a phone i bought on a plan, paid off and they then unlock it, work on this sprint free year deal?

or do i need to have a phone that i purchased as unlocked from the beginning?

Are both versions i mention considered fully unlocked and will work on sprint free plan? I hope this makes more sense
Yes both versions are eligible for Sprint free plan. US Carrier versions purchased on plan, paid off and unlocked by carrier are eligible. Also US unlocked(unbranded) version is eligible. International versions are ineligible though so stay away from those. There are software differences between carrier version and unbranded version but someone else more familiar with those may chime in on that aspect.

So, I called back and told the new rep that I was disconnected and couldn't complete the process. The new rep then proceeded with setting up my account for free service through 1/31/2020.
Super!
I figured just calling back would probably do it but also gave you the detailed argument just in case you got another recalcitrant rep.

A real life downtown city speed test 2x.
Sprint I did, was 3mbs
Boost Mobile was 56mbs.

Wtheck is that?????????????????????????????????
I thought they used the same towers.
It's not a 1x thing, I tried at least 3x in different areas
and got the same results.
I've seen Verizon at 70mbs, this is 3, somethimes 2 mbs.
Most likely the phone.

Boost is part of Sprint.

There is no case on which Boost service should ever be better than Sprint service.

Does this plan still comes with the Global Roaming feature where you get free data (2G speed) and text? I was able to get my service set up but Global Roaming wasn't listed under the plan detail info. I know Wiki mentioned that it does but it wasn't called out on my plan.

Yes it does.

Global Roaming is part of all Sprint plans.

I concur with everything edog11 said.
Personally I would buy a branded version (any carrier) rather than the unbranded one now that Samsung has released brand-switching.

That way you get 100.0% compatibility with every carrier.

With the unbranded version (called the "unlocked" version) you get about 95% compatibility with any one individual carrier. The only advantage now of the unbranded version is less carrier bloatware. Some people do still prefer that version for that reason.

But, on Sprint, there are glitches on Visual Voicemail and RCS on the unbranded version. I think you can get around them for the most part. And features like VoLTE and Carrier Aggregation are often delayed or restricted relative to the Sprint branded firmware. Again, for the most part you can get around these problems.

so instead of the regular unlocked phone, buy another brand like verizon? but you mentioned earlier that I'd need to log into verizon to get the right? and i dont have an account. and i'd like a sale of some sort at least. I hope to find a good solution without spending a ton of research on it first.

I would if it is cheaper.

But Sprint ones are usually cheapest anyway so why not buy a Sprint model? Now that we have brand switching, a Sprint model is just as good for all carriers as any other model. People do not understand this at all so you will probably find the Sprint model still at a discount. People will still pay a premium for the "unlocked version" because they do not understand that brand switching is now available.

You could even buy a locked Sprint one. Sprint will unlock it after 50 days too.

(But check IMEI in the Sprint checker).

BTW Verizon models are never locked (yet) as far as I recall (other than for payment issues etc.). edog11 please correct me if I am wrong.

Also I think many reputable Ebay sellers offering guarantees would list locked/unlocked/lien status and guarantee it.

I tried again today and it worked out. These last three they didn't charge me anything to Port over. The pin they had me choose was a 6 digit one. The first one I tried porting over still hasn't completed and it had a 4 digit PIN. They also charged me $3 for that one. I had asked about why the different number of digits and was told that the older way was 6 digits, the newer was 4. I said I'll take which ever way costs less. Pretty strange the new way has less digits, costs money and takes way longer to Port.
Interesting experience, wonder if it has to do with the TMo sims we use when trying to port or start a new number?

thanks for all your helpful info. with the free sprint offer, you need to bring your own device. so i would need to buy it before signing up. i dont see sprint prices as lower than any of these posted.

No problem.
I meant prices on EBay etc. If you are not looking at those, that's fine of course. Or are you saying, even on EBay, prices for Sprint models are no cheaper? I have not looked specifically but was just generalizing from the past......

Hi,
I am having the same issue. I am stuck at "Sprint 3G".

Could you pls explain this step you mentioned?
Quoted:
...8. Phone started working, but data was stuck at 3G. I tried edog11's suggestion multiple times, but nothing was working. I was getting impatient and was about to post here seeking help, but then did a quick google search. Someone mentioned to do the plane mode thing to reset the settings. I was not much hopeful, but tried it, and lo and behold, LTE showed up immediately when I canceled the plane mode.

I googled but cannot find anything about performing the "plane mode thing". Could you pls elaborate the steps? Thanks!
NOTE: My phone is an iPhone SE (A1723) which is the Sprint version.

Quote from ludhianvi :
I had initially signed up for this plan in January 2018 with 2-lines, but I wanted to re-sign for another free year. I was successfully able to do that with a new SSN. Even though all the steps have been mentioned multiple times in the thread as well as wiki, I am just going to write them down again..may be someone will find them helpful:

1. I bought two digital SIMs on eBay, from a single buyer. Email with 2-SIM numbers came within minutes. I had actually ordered these SIMs couple of weeks ago when eBay had a $5 off $10 promo (it is long expired now).

2. Called TMo at 877-234-4299 as per SamKQboro's suggestion, but the wait time was over 90 minutes. So, I went the online route.

3. Ported one line first to TMo using Pay as you go plan. I had to refill (pay) $3 to get the service. With tax, it was about $3.19. I created a 4-digit PIN during the process. Got an email almost immediately after payment, this email had my TMo account number. TMo account number was different than 1+phone number. Sprint number was ported to TMo in about 5-10 minutes.

4. Checked on the sprint site with IMEI and phone number (ported to TMo) and got number eligible to port.

5. Called 866-782-8777 number (in Wiki) to port the number to Sprint as a new customer. Used a different SSN, and after about 45-minutes (including hold times & talking with the rep), service was set-up, and I was approved for 5-lines. Number was ported to Sprint from TMo in about 10 minutes. Rep told me that free service is good through 1/31/2020. But, I don't see it anywhere in my online account. Is there a place where I can verify it?

6. After I hung up with the rep, I was able to make calls, but data was not working. So, I followed edog11's suggestion, basically followed these:

*******
Try some of these.
1-Reset Subscriber Settings (Carrier Reset)
Go to dial pad as though you're about to dial a phone number
Enter # # 25327 #
Tap Call
A "Reset Subscriber Settings" message will appear - tap OK
Wait 5-10 seconds; the signal notification will display "Searching" on the top left of the screen
When the phone shows a signal again, the phone is ready to use

2-Service Update (Profile & PRL Update)
Connect to a Wi-Fi network
Tap the phone app
Dial # # 873283 #
Tap Call
"Starting Service Update" message will appear - tap OK
If update is successful "Service Update Complete" message will appear after about a minute - tap OK

3-Check for an old LTE APN profile and delete it.
The problem was due to a Profile named "LTE APN". (Settings>General>Profiles - Right below "VPN". There may not be "Profile" on the Menu, depending on the carrier used before.). Deleted this Profile, then LTE Data signal showed up! This Profile was probably from the previous carrier.
*****
And, I was good to go, LTE showed up and data started working.

7. Now, that one line was good, I was comfortable moving 2nd line to Sprint. So, I followed steps 3-onwards. This time, I was on phone with Sprint rep for only 30-minutes (not much hold time).

8. So, finally, all set Smilie

Notes:

1. Both reps added insurance plan. I told them I don't need it, but they wont budge and both reps told that I can remove it from my account anytime. And I had read here multiple times that there is no point in wasting time with reps fighting the insurance, so I didn't press much. I removed the insurance plan after setting up my online account, and also verified with chat, and got a copy of the chat emailed to me, so now I have proof.

2. Both reps told me that there is $30 activation fee, and I told them that promo page shows activation fee is waived, and they gladly removed it.

3. Oh, and I am using iPhone 6s+ on both lines.

Hope someone finds it useful.

Thanks to everyone in this thread.

Well -117 dBm is too low. It is just not good enough for a reliable signal. That is why apps do not work. It might be ok on some phones in some locations although it is marginal at best.

The question remains why does it not roam, as you say.

The reason probably is that the phone and the network consider that that signal level should be "good enough" (even though it actually is not). This could be a design defect.or limitation or because the phone does not benefit from more favorable treatment given to phones that may get VoLTE later or because the phone has not received updates given to more recent phones. I assume you have done all available updates including profile and PRL.

If the problem is mainly in one place, say at home, you should be able to get a Magic Box from tech support later that may resolve that. But they are waiting for the new model to be ready and are not shipping it currently.

Other than that, you can ask in Moto forums.

There might be a way to block bands 41, 25 and 26 if needed. There is for some phones. That is purely a function of the debugging capabilities of the particular model. That would force it onto bands 4 and 2. I can do it on my Samsung S8 and force TMO roaming.

I figured out how to block bands in Moto E5 Play and G6 Play. I opened the dialpad and typed ##3282# which took me to Data Settings with a list of settings. In the list, I selected LTE and it gave me choices View and Edit. When I selected Edit, it asked for Passcode. I figured Passcode is the MSL, so I had to chat with Sprint and they gave me the MSL. I entered the MSL into the Passcode and selected Verify. Once inside LTE, I went to "Band 25 Enabled" and turned it off and also went to "Band 41 Enabled" and turned it off, and then I selected Done. I left Band 26 on for now since I have not seen band 26 in LTE Discovery.

So far my phone roams to band 2 or 4 and data works, and my phone does not go to band 25 or 41.

Fantastic!

Problem solved then!

Those are similar steps as on Samsungs.

The fact you have not seen band 26 may be part of the original problem. It is Sprint's wide-area-coverage band. Maybe you live in a border area (where band 26 is absent because of international agreements)? Or maybe your area does not have it yet for some other reason.

Hi,
I googled but cannot find anything about performing the "plane mode thing". Could you pls elaborate the steps? Thanks!
Have you tried turning on airplane mode? Then wait 2 minutes. Then turn off airplane mode.
