Guess they are finally valuing their service quality at zero dollars!! Having unfortunate experience of being a sprint customer, I wholeheartedly concur with the valuation of their service.

Hi! I have ten specific questions that only pertain to my individual circumstances. I epitomize laziness and my sense of entitlement is impervious to reason. Therefore it is the responsibility of anyone and everyone who reads this to find the answers to my questions.

As it says there:

"The Essential PH-1 is a great phone, especially updated with Android 9.x, but it has one serious flaw: Its reception is lacking especially in marginal areas."

And there is NOTHING that can be done to fix this issue EXCEPT be in a very strong signal area.
The most offered explanation has to do with the phone's ceramic case blocking the cellular signals.

But, as I said before, I think this is a great phone otherwise.
Get the latest Android 9.x update.

But if this PH-1 is used consistently in a marginal signal area one would better be served by a different phone, like a Moto G line. Moto phones seem to have great signal reception.

You may also want to check out the original Sprint Essential PH-1 thread here at Sickdeals:

https://slickdeals.net/f/10772655-sprint-essential-phone-5-m-with-flex-lease

or search for essential ph-1 in all forums for more data on this phone.

On a somewhat related matter:

5G cell service and 5G cellular devices and simple 5G hotspot devices should be widely available sometime next year that'll have data speeds faster than Fios.
Keep in mind that ALL current 4G devices will be incompatible with the new 5G service, so spending several hundred $$$$ this year on a 4G device, like $1,000.00 iPhones, etc., is not really a good idea.
Of course, 4G will be around for probably some more years but if in a year or so you can get, for instance, a $1,000.00 5G device why spend that much now for a lower tech item???

Also, 5G when fully implemented will eventually make hard wired internet services like Fios/Cable/etc., obsolete.
What planet do you live in to think that 5G will be rolled out nationwide? I remember when 4G came out and it was spotty AF and I like in 2 miles outside of Downtown Los Angeles! and outside of LA there was no 4G for awhile...I was paying 4G price because of the phone and had no 4G around for almost a year. its been almost 20 years since 4G rolled out and there isn't 4G everywhere...you think these companies are throwing billions all at once on the infostructure? You really think you'll get speed faster than Fios??! yeah the tech in theory is super fast but do you really think they'll give it to you? 5G is coming out and at best I get 30mbps from LTE in Los Angeles. which is fine...i don't watch 4k material on a screen less than 1080...also you'll be paying extra for that 5g...for speed you don't need and speed you wont get. I'll stick to my LTE phone for a while.

...Wow that blows as I was thinking the opposite. That a truly unlocked Note 9 would easily switch to Tmobile. Sprint by itself is very lacking network wise as we all know, but seamless roaming with Tmobile should make it more than liveable.
Your thinking was correct, the factory unlocked Note 9 can roam on T-Mobile seamlessly as I have told you earlier. The hardware in all US Note 9 variants is identical, and the CSC file in the firmware together with the PRL determines which radio bands to use. The factory unlocked Note 9 firmware (XAA) comes with multi-CSC file. The multi-CSC file has all the US carriers' CSCs, and the T-Mobile's CSC is there; else, T-Mobile will not work on the factory unlocked Note 9. Also worth mentioning, the CSC file has no carrier's bloatwares (many people got this wrong). Carrier's bloatwares and features are stored in the USERDATA file. Lastly, Sprint VoLTE works on the factory unlocked Note 9 with Android Pie. I and a few people have tested this. The official Android Pie for Note 9 will be released on any day now as all testings have been completed. Stay tuned.

Just to be clear, what everyone here called the "brand switching" feature on the carrier unlocked phone is called the BYOD Experience [samsung.com] by Samsung, and you don't need the BYOD Experience to roam nor to use VoLTE (if available) on any network. Also, the BYOD Experience is not a firmware. It is a software (system app) that runs in the background that activates the AutoPreconfig [samsungknox.com] service [android.com]. It looks for the carrier ICCID code when a SIM is inserted into the phone and automatically installs/configures the phone with the carrier features/settings/apps. Some advanced users prefer to disable the BYOD Experience and customize the firmware files to their liking. For instance, if you are using your carrier unlocked phone on different carriers and are switching between different carriers multiple times per day, you may want to disable the BYOD Experience and just customize the firmware files with only the features you need, if you don't want your phone to automatically load different apps/features (which can be time consuming or inconvenience) each time you switch the SIM.

For those who want to disable the BYOD Experience, you can use the following command with ADB:
Code:
pm disable-user --user 0 com.sec.android.AutoPreconfig
Quote from iwheela :
So to get the best benefits of seamless roaming on Tmobile and VoLTE, I should purchase a Sprint branded Note 9?
Not really, see above.
Quote from iwheela :
Would a Sprint branded Note 9 work on Verizon just in case I have to go back?
Yes, as long as it's SIM unlocked.

Hope this helps and clears things up a bit.

It is with a heavy heart that these devices [sprint.com] will no longer be able to activate on the Sprint network after April 30, 2019. [sprint.com] I have many great memories with some of these devices Frown

If your device(s) is already active on the Network (turned on and in use), it will continue to work, but the following changes will no longer be possible:
  • Re-activation (Master resets will render the device inoperable. A master reset is initiated by entering the following on the phone's keypad: "##RTN#" or "##786#)."
  • Subscriber/profile information changes – you can't swap phone numbers on this device.
  • Preferred roaming list (PRL) updates. A PRL is important because it tells your device what towers to use. Since your device(s) won't be able to get an updated PRL, over time you may experience irregular service if changes are made to the Network in your area.

Xdandroid was more or less a must since Winphone 6.5 had basically no apps for it. But it was still... a less than awesome phone experience. Random reboots because of the need to OC to get Android programs to run. Constant corruption of the SD card because I was hesitant to flash main memory with Android. And, worst of all for me, a wildly inaccurate battery meter.

Still, I loved that phone. It was a text-messaging demon. I still miss having a real, physical thumb board. I kept the phone (and SERO legacy) as long as I did because I though of it as insurance. I could always upgrade it from SERO Legacy ($30+$9 tax) to SERO Unlimited ($50+$7 tax) some day. But SWAC is the new SERO. There's just no reason to be on SERO anymore.

I'll still keep the phone to show kids decades from now what a physical keyboard on a phone looked and felt like -- and what we sacrificed in the name of thin, sexy phones.

I bought SIM card from the phone provided. And total charge come out at 3.19. Once I received the Sim, I activated through call center. It seems like the first charge they credited, but now are charging me $6.92 for SIM and Sprint surcharge plus taxes. Is this normal?

The sim is $2.99 so that sounds about right. At the bottom of the wiki is a list of zip codes and the monthly charges.

Thank you for your answer. Sorry, seems I was not clear in my post. That charge $6.92 is for SIM card plus activation. First they charged 3.19 for Sim and shipped out the Sim. Later they reversed the charge and recharge $6.92 adding Sprint fees to it after I activated that sim to my account.

Did a search but didn't see an answer, sorry if it's already been asked. I haven't been happy with my service and thinking about canceling. I'm about to receive my $30 activation fee credit. If I cancel with a $30 credit on my account do I just lose that or would Sprint send it back to me in a check?
