You could have used the trick in the wiki and no need to port out and back in.
Which trick were you referring to ? I can't find it in wiki without port out.

Near the top of the Wiki: "Here are the steps to convert a free plan line to Kickstart without needing to port out.."

which links to https://slickdeals.net/f/10235008-sprint-byod-1-year-unlimited-talk-text-data-free-w-eligible-device-sim-req?p=128482822#post128482822

However I would say this is mainly for the sure-footed who are able to navigate Sprint channels confidently without prior assurances from Sprint reps.

fyiw, half a year ago, I could not get anyone to notate my acct for a future date cancellation. Whether call or chat, you'll be put in transfer hell... 3-4 reps...1/2 hour later... 3/4 hour... i'd lose patience over a couple of days... oops, it's last day of my billing period... I transferred out to Tello ($5 buy-in, bonus reff credit good for extra couple months). Good riddance...

until I get the emails for $250 comeback for 2+ lines. I only have one line left in Tello, offer is $50 credit if port it back into $25 Kickstart, they said it would cover 2 months... so I did it...

I look back at those old sprint kickstart bills online, that comeback $50 credit paid for $30 activation fee, prorated 1/2 month past month at the new $30/month kickstart rate, and part of the $30 for next month's bill, so my first sprint kickstart bill - $5 autopay, + ~$5 cell fees is still ~$30 even with that somewhat fake $50 winback credit.

TL;DR if you did port out, their winback/comeback credit will be used up by activation fee and the prorated past month at the new higher rate. So even if you went a month off Sprint, your online bills will still be a smooth transition of $7tax from 1yrfree to the $40 kickstart month; only difference is, you lost a month of unlimited sprint.

moral: don't port out. just have them convert your 1yrFree to kickstart if you still want unlimited.

... i think i still have a chat window open waiting for the Nth rep to transfer me...

For anyone doing this now, to cancel please call only Retentions at only the number I posted. Do not chat, do not call other departments. Retentions (aka Account Services) is the only department authorized to take cancellations. You cannot do it by Chat and you cannot do it with Customer Service. There is no need for any transfer and the Retentions rep taking the call has to take the cancel if you insist, and knows exactly how to do it themself already.

Now, again just for others, it is Retentions' mission to try to retain you first, which they will do. Just do not be talked out of it and do not agree to put it off until later or let them promise to plan for it rather than do it then and there. Some very nice people (I am sure including the poster) tend to be talked out of things fairly easily and prefer to go and try another number rather than insist, but that is not viable in this case.

Still, I am glad you posted your experience to show that experiences vary. For those who do not like the sound of this, just port out instead to a non-Sprint provider such as TMobile prepaid, then call the "Come Back To Sprint" number to get back on and onto KickStart.

Did you call the appropriate department ?

Not my experience, I followed wiki (thank's Comintel) and that was one of the easiest interactions I had with any telecom operator so far. ( called for future cancellation and chatted for Kickstarter come back. Easy peasy.

I lot of people believe that, rather than following a very specific series of numbers to call and steps to take, they should be able to deal with Sprint by chat or by calling general Sprint numbers and have Sprint route their requests internally as necessary.

I completely agree with them that they *should* be able to do that, but in reality it will not work for this particular task in most cases.

Hey guys, another update. I just received my January 2020 bill, just like the dec bill, it is $0 too. Like I said earlier, my plan was set to expire by end of Nov, 2019.

Hope that helps. Can I get some thumbs up now? Smilie

If you do not mind looking, what does it say now about your plan name and free period end date under Plans and Services or Plans and Equipment?

Thanks.

Visible, Mint, Sprint's Kickstart, Tello, Ultramobile offers, and some Redpocket one-year offers on EBay are all popular and have been discussed here in the last couple of weeks.

I was thinking of doing Mint, seemed to be the best fit. Has anyone done this and if so, what are the steps? I.e. do they mail you out a sim and then you port once you get the sim? Or do you need to buy the sim somewhere else? thanks!

Edit:
sorry 'bout the PM, sharing some good info for everybody.

Virginmobile is being absorbed into Boostmobile. Tello want's their customers, they're offering 50% off 1st month using coupon VIRGIN on their website. If you're thinking of parking your Sprint number, no data, unlimited text, is $5, or $2.5 for the 1st month. Their bonus credit can last you a couple months more, turns out to be cheaper than the Sprint tax I was paying.
If their 50% virgin coupon doesn't work, try 20save20 for 20% , or 15offaff for 15% . These are googled coupon.

all 3 are Sprint MVNO, so any unlocked sprint phone with the corresponding SIM will work for the port in.

Amazon has Mint trial kits, 2 SIMs for $5, try one for 7 days, port your number to the 2nd SIM if you like their speed.

Ultra, tmo mvno similar to mint (?) has the same 2 sim starter kit on amazon for $1.99 now, free ship if you have prime. Check them out if you have an unlocked GSM phone.
