Smallest frame size it comes in is 18". That would be a little big for someone that is 5'5". Frame size of 16"-17" would be better.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the Nishiki at Dick's (it's honestly a great deal for what you're getting).

Moreso just saying that paying the the premium at a local bike store may be worth it for some people.

My post summed up was basically this: if you're a DIY'er and don't mind working on your own bike yourself, the Nishiki is a great option. If you're not a DIY'er and want a shop to work on your bike, it might be worth paying extra for free service down the road. It's like buying an extended warranty for your car--not worth it to some, but worth it to others.

Again, it's not a knock against this bike, moreso just defending the premium paid at a local bike shop.

Understood. The X warranty is a popular sales tactic at dealerships to make money on you, just sayin Wink

I have no problem taking my Dbacks into my LBS and asking for tuning, tips, etc. They always sneer at the Dbacks I spent $400-600 on and try to sell me the $2k bike (not an exaggeration), but I am OK with it because they help me keep my bike riding!

I just want to say that up front as I can't really comment on the ease of set up.

Is Dicks a good place to buy a bike in general? I mean, has to be better than Walmart, right?

Do they take any measurements to adjust bike to each customer?

Yes better than Walmart. Generally speaking bikes are assembled without measurements taken as they assume you already chose the right size, and the only adjustment needed is the seat height.

When on sale, some of the bikes are a good buy, but as others pointed out you'll lose some of the personalized service (and free adjustments) that most dedicated bike shops offer.

I still don't get it. For years we used to use stuff like this to bounce over curbs and potholes on city streets. Ride downhill, trails, and many times jump very steep ramps and come done with quite a crash. Now you are saying I need to spend thousands to get the same performance and need a full time mechanic.Confused

I read it perfectly clearly. You describe the tire coming of the rim. I don't know what you mean by "blew it off the rim". If you heard a pop and then it came of the rim that is a type of flat where the wheel goes pop and then flat called a blow out. It may have been caused by an underinflated tire that could cause the tube to get pinched. It may have been caused by an overinflated tire. All tires will likely come off the rim if run when near flat or underinflated.

I don't want to get between your love notes to each other ;-)

But I want to mention that with cheap rims and marginally spec tires, it is entirely possible for the tire to slip/pop off. Heck, I personally experienced this with some cheap 26" wheels a month ago. (Luckily), it happened overnight after pumping them up. I did some further experiments and found this only happened with 2 particular tires (completely different brand and width, 1 old and 1 new) and only when pumped above 35psi. The other rim (also different brand/vintage) didn't have the same problem. I even tried different inner tubes in the combos to conclude this...

I just stumbled onto this deal. Looks like the same entry level equipment has my Giant Talon 2 29er (2012).
