I was on the USEast HC ladder in D2 for awhile, before 1.10 (or whatever major patch it was that completely messed up the ladders). Well, before I died on that character due to a disconnect. I used to dual box to be able to run a backup character to grab gear for my HC characters. I think I had three copies of the game at one point to be able to load extra mule characters easily. It's been awhile.
So when I say this, it's from the perspective of someone who wasted far more hours on DII than she should admit: Diablo III is fine. In fact, between seasons and rifts and greater rifts and class dungeons and now challenge modes, it's FAR more fun than Diablo II ever actually was.
It's true that when Diablo III FIRST released it was a disappointment from the perspective of carrying forward the legacy from Diablo II, but other than the core gameplay itself (which wasn't the issue) it's a completely different game now than it was at release. The gearing situation is completely different (and absolutely better both for someone who is only playing casual and ALSO for someone who is throwing gobs of hours at the game in a given season), the auction house mess is gone, things bind to accounts in sensible ways, personal loot is so much better than how contentious things could get in DII, etc.
I'll take what Diablo III has become any day over Baal run after Baal run after Baal run, or grinding foothills to level while wondering if the next person to pop into the game was going to be a hydra exploit mage (or worse, wondering if someone who's boss running with you is going to . Etc. After about level 60, Diablo II really didn't have much actually going for it. 70s and 80s were just… yeah. At the time it seemed fun, partially due to playing with friends/etc, and having your character and gear on the line in HC helped create some tension, but… it was nothing but a completely repetitious grind in reality, with nothing really to push against in terms of skill and limits, along with a lot of very locked-in number crunching to match attack speed amounts to breakpoints for frames per attack for specific attacks. The new gear system in III is far more interesting in creating viable and bizarrely functional builds.

Not much of a savings when digital is a few bucks more.
Nice couch play mode.
True, but you still have to go out to pick this up. Gas savings.
Wish my brain was still as simple as it was 10 years ago when I could burn hours on button mashing looting action without questioning my life.
You sure it's still not that simple?

$15 just to play Necro class????? Lowering prices for the base game and expansion right after a lot of people bought them at full price in preparation for the update.... Really Blizzard? Why would anyone continue to give this anti consumer publisher any money?
Having spent at least 100 hrs on Grim Dawn, it's NOT better than D3, not even close IMO.
Pretty sad for you or Blizzard? I am sure Blizzard is not "sad" if they can charge that for an old game.
'Hey, I know you guys love the Necro from D2, so we're adding the class to D3....and we're going to charge you as much as the game itself because you're loyal customers.'
I mean, I guess if I could sell someone a mod to an old game for as much as the game cost itself, I would do it too...but I wouldn't feel good about it.
This. D3 is dead. PoE is incredible

Yeah, i spent 60 bucks on D3 after the years of hype and religious D2-destruction play. Path of Exile is what D3 should have been, complete freedom of builds. Highly recommend the game, plus, what slicker of a deal than F2P, right?
