Goodbye Keurig...I went to the dark side and now grind coffee beans

70,256 5,366 August 7, 2017 at 12:52 PM in Grocery (4)
I was out of town for a month and just couldn't get past the fact that you cannot clean the internal reservoir of a Keurig. Being the germaphobe that I am and allergic to mold..and ick...I couldn't get myself to use it again after it had been unplugged for so long Stick Out Tongue

I never really drank coffee when I drove a school bus (a cappuccino here or there doesn't count) in my book.

The Keurig made it simple, quick and clean.. no fuss no muss.

I had a reg coffee pot in the cupboard for when relatives came to town but I preferred my weak, sweet coffee pods.
Even some of the medications I have to take can cause acid re-flux issues so weaker coffee and not being dependent on it made sense... *also prone to migraines anyway.

Well, I spent 3 weeks with my brother and my sister stayed over most nights..and both drink coffee religiously..so yes, there I was drinking fresh ground organic coffee beans.. so it was fairly strong.
I know that if I don't wean off it slowly ..weaker and weaker I'll have one heck of a headache..so I gave in to the dark side and bought a bean grinder and organic beans laugh out loud

smh

And finally, if you bought your coffee at Costco, it'll go stale unless you drink TONS of it per day. Costco sells 2lb bags at a minimum IIRC.

Whatever you don't grind, place in an airtight container, away from direct light and keep them cool (some people say place them in a fridge/freezer, others say that since coffee is hygroscopic (like brake fluid!) a fridge/freezer adds moisture which destroys coffee).
laugh out loud it's in the freezer.

Shame you missed out on the Hot Deal for a $50 Bodum burr grinder at Target!

Based on what I've read, I do not recommend storing it in the fridge/freezer.

You want touchy, you ought to see how I am before I have my coffee! Grin

You might want to give cold brewing a try, it's supposed to cut down on the acidity and bitterness. I've done it once so far, and enjoyed the results.

Generally the only coffee I ever drink is Folger's that has likely been sitting in the drip coffee maker at work for a couple of hours. Hey, it's always free and it's usually at around 4:00am. Dontknow

Put coffee ground in jar, add water, wait a day, strain the grounds out, enjoy!

You guys are jumping waaaay ahead...
I don't care that much for the taste of coffee yet. I liked the weak...sweet coffee in the pods, remember? laugh out loud

Now I need the caffeine due to circumstances and decided to venture down this road as opposed to weening myself off of it altogether because I cannot make myself go back to the Keurig because i can't stand the thought of water sitting in the internal reservoir like it did ..or does normally. Just drinking normally brewed coffee is a big leap.. grinding whole beans.. HUGE leap...
I still need cream in it.
Going to iced coffee... that will be a while yet. laugh out loud They have iced tea and I love that so..for now...until I become a hardcore addict...I think I'll have to pass.

Oh in MI I was at a bar/restaurant and had the most amazing "black and blue tea" - house brewed tea with fresh smashed black and blueberries in it. Kind of reminded me a bit of boba tea that we have out here in Vegas. Stick Out Tongue

I like sweet.. I need things to sweeten me up...

laugh out loud Growing up my mom always had Maxwell House in the fridge, had it every day.
At work, when I drove the bus I have no idea what ick they drank... possibly Folgers as that seems to have been the standard stuff companies had/have on hand.

In this office they grind/burr (I don't know, don't ask) whole beans and have an espresso machine that will make those, reg cups of coffee or even the frothy stuff I think and a keurig. *no not mine.
