security camera advice?

396 18 August 15, 2017 at 12:04 PM
I have little knowledge on security cameras. I am in the process of purchasing a home in NYC and want to install 4 or more cameras, both outer and inside facing.

Looking for something that will be wireless, wifi, and the ability to record footage. Also looking to be able to monitor from my phone.

Not looking to spend more than $300 on a setup.

I was looking at Zmodo however I am hearing they are moving to a cloud based setup which eventually will require subscription, etc.

Any other suggestions?

For around $300 you could get a Ruger SR9, they're pretty nice. Of course since you're in NY the price will probably jump to $700.

They're wireless, don't run on battery. No subscription necessary, just have to clean it every once in a while.

It wont help you when your shit goes missing. Then again, a security cam might not either.

Don't expect quality video through a wireless/wifi connection. You will be disappointed. Look to Dahua or Hikvision cameras for best quality, best firmware, and best reliability. Finally, visit and read the Dahua and Hikvision forums at ipcamtalk.com [ipcamtalk.com].

Right now, the Dahua "starlight" cameras are the best thing going for outdoor security. Inside the house, the Hikvision "cube" cameras are small and extremely reliable.

I have a Reolink 4K 5G camera for the outside and it works really well. I have it send the video to my FTP server and email me a snapshot of any sensed motion. I have a couple of Canary cameras that I like since they include temp and air quality. You need to pay for storage but it is not that bad and if you need to use it in court it can be proved that you did not change it. I am not sure how footage I had on my PC would be going into court. I also have a Yi Home camera that streams to my phone and I am sure it could be set up for FTP or email alerts it keeps an eye on my rabbits.

I've had some good experiences with Unifi Video. Their UVC-Micro is wifi and pretty small and unobtrusive. I think they're not selling the first gen anymore, and are about to release the second gen.

Dontknow

Hadn't seen that one before. Thanks Paint! If it's by Ubiquiti Networks, then the wifi ought to be solid. My experience with the Hikvision cube cameras is their wifi capabilities stink and a wired LAN cable is a necessity. I blame it on the "antenna array" PCB module they used instead of a film/metal strip with a U.FL cable to connect to the PC board. Frown

I went and purchased 3 of YI Home Camera Wireless IP cameras today just to get me started. I will try and mount them in the windows to face outside for a temporary setup and have them record to MicroSD and send me a stream to my phone.

I am thinking of going with an NVR setup with outdor cameras as a permanent setup...need to figure out which is a good bang for buck. Trying to avoid subscription based services.

If you place them indoors pointing out the windows, it's highly likely you'll get IR reflections flooding back into the camera, from the window glass. Disable the automatic IR and place an IR light source outside.

Does nest have free cloud service? Does it record locally to a memory card?

they do have cloud storage but its not free, there are 2 options as well a phone or tablet it can record up to 2 mintues when it tracks movements on a computer its up to 60 mintues : detals = https://nest.com/support/article/...r-Nest-Cam

A subscription that covers 10 days of continuously recorded video costs $10 a month or $100 a year for the first camera. Each additional camera costs $5 a month or $50 a year. A 30 day history costs $30 a month for the first camera, or $300 for the year.Jul

I don't pay for the service my brother is a computer/software engineer with a masters degree so I installed all the nests indoor/outdoor, but then he wired all of them to record on my NAS server which is roughly 10TB so after I believe after 5 years or so it automatically deletes old footage or once I review it. and nest doesn't record constantly it only starts recording once there is a movement which is really sensitive as well, even when my dog moves in his sleep it starts recording which is good and bad.
