Would you trust Home Depot/Lowe's to do a kitchen counter install?

Getting quotes to install granite counters in our kitchen. New sink/faucet, everything else is staying. Home Depot is ~30% cheaper than the next cheapest installer. What would you do? I don't like the idea of using a big box store to do the install as I know they just sub it out to whoever is cheapest. But this is way cheaper. Any thoughts?

I was wondering about this too. We had Lowes do a new carpet install on the house we just bought and they did a great job. Turns out I hate the carpet but that's my fault, not theirs. I'd love to get a countertop quote. Especially if other folks have good things to say about them.

They sub all installs, so it's a crap shoot. Had storm door installed, and not great. Get good references and hire someone yourself. At least you have a better idea of what you are getting. After all, anyone who is worth it does not need home depot or Lowes to find him/her work!

I'm surprised that either store is cheaper than other contractors because for air conditioning and roofing they tend to be much more expensive. I'd check the quality of the granite -- under black light. I don't know about Lowe's, but Home Depot will back you up if things go wrong -- eventually.

And please correct the title to get rid of "do an install" and replace it with the shorter "install".
