Would you trust Home Depot/Lowe's to do a kitchen counter install?

Getting quotes to install granite counters in our kitchen. New sink/faucet, everything else is staying. Home Depot is ~30% cheaper than the next cheapest installer. What would you do? I don't like the idea of using a big box store to do the install as I know they just sub it out to whoever is cheapest. But this is way cheaper. Any thoughts?

I had Home Depot install a granite counter and sink for my wet bar a few months ago and they did a great job. The work was actually completed by a totally legit and busy kitchen place. I know that because I had to go there to pick out the granite slab.

Plus I think Home Depot and Lowe's actually have some pretty high standards when it comes to contractors. nod

I don't know about kitchen counters, but I had a townhouse a number of years back that had carpets installed by Lowe's contractors. It was a pretty bad job - the middle creased pretty ridiculously such that folks would easily trip on it. I hired an independent contractor that had great online reviews to fix it -- he mentioned most of his work is to patch up the big box retailer's mistakes.

Very anecdotal story but my 2c.

I think you'll have to take the sink/faucet off for the install. odds are their install doesn't include reinstallation. they might mount the sink but i doubt they would do a faucet/plumbing. might want to double check.

if the cabinets are already installed and are level, i see no reason not to. counter top is just glued down and they run a bead of chalk/sealant against the wall.

it's possible it isn't actually home depot that does the install but a subcontractor. i got carpet from home depot and it was some random guys in a white truck that installed it. they did a good job.

We had a quartz countertop installed through Lowe's. The contractor did an excellent job.

I suppose it can really vary by region. HD was way less than everyone else but never checked Lowe's, that's my next stop.

Hd/Lowes doesn't do it per se - they outsource to local contractors. IT's not HD corporate countertop installation team that comes to your house.

That said, HD/Lowes can negotiate much lower pricing due to volume and guaranteed business - this might actually be codified in a contract, too.

They sub all installs, so it's a crap shoot. Had storm door installed, and not great. Get good references and hire someone yourself. At least you have a better idea of what you are getting. After all, anyone who is worth it does not need home depot or Lowes to find him/her work!

A former co-worker of DH used Home Depot to order and install a custom carpet, they got the carpet pattern/colors wrong twice then the installer messed up the carpet. They had to fight to get their money back and a Lowes contractor wound up re-installing the carpet the correct way.

Well countertops are pretty straightforward, read the contract and pay it all by credit card.

I ended up going with Home Depot, hard to argue with the price. Looking forward to it.

After a slab cutting mishap, we are finally having it installed. Going in right now, so far so good.

Guy I work with had HD do his granite install. They messed it up numerous times and I think it took the guy around a month and multiple attempts before it was correct. Aside from the issues he said HD was really good about making sure it was done right. He'd go to them that it was screwed up and they'd handle it with the sub.
