Why they insist on 0% financing for these phone deals

I am basically in the market for a new phone for my wife. Looking at all the current deals they are only available if you do 0% financing with the carriers. Financing should really be optional, I can buy my phone full price thank you very much. It sucks for the consumer too because now I can't take advantage of my credit card's extended warranty.
I really don't understand the incentive to do it this way, to stop people from buying the phone and then selling it right away? No it doesn't! I can still get the phone, get the $150 gift card target is offering at the moment, sell the phone on craigslist or whatever and go back to using my old phone if I so choose.
