Weight Loss
# A more controversial use of the hCG shot is as a way to lose weight, in conjunction with a low-calorie diet developed by British doctor A.T.W. Simeons. Simeons looked at studies of Indian women and overweight boys who were given hCG shots for fertility reasons and to stimulate puberty respectively. He noticed that both the women and boys lost fat. The FDA has stated that the use of the hCG hornome as a weight loss tool is both ineffective and dangerous.

http://www.weightlossn
HCG injections have been claimed to be effective in weight loss by aiding in localized reduction, affecting mood and suppressing hunger. This obesity therapy (injections of HGH and dietary modification) was introduced by Simeons in 19541 but its effectiveness has been disputed for a long time. Simeons developed the weight loss therapy based on his experience of treating young boys suffering from dystrophia adipositogenitalis (the Frohlich syndrome) using human chorionic gonadotropin. It is claimed that obese patients treated with the Simeons therapy will have a rapid weight loss without feeling weak and hungry. Despite the ambiguous evidence of its effectiveness, low-dose injectable HCG combined with a weight loss diet remains a popular method for weight control and obesity treatment. However, a recent test shows the HCG therapy doesnt promote weight loss and HCG diet has no advantage over the calorie restriction method in weight reduction.
One thing I would admit though is there seems to be a lot of rigidity in thinking in various med fields. Like the controversy over the low carb diet. I always dismissed that thinking it was bogus since the usual dogma was a sensible moderate varied diet was the best thing and anything that diverted from it was crazy. The alternative was mainstream healthnuts pushed super low fat , high fiber diets. About 6 years ago some not-so-wacko reporters and others started pushing the low carb diet saying there seemed to be SOME merit and that serious research needed to be done. A lot of the mainstream med field went ballistic over the idea ranting that it was definitely insane and some seemed to suggest it wasnt worthy of research. Well a string of studies came out that seemed to show low carb diets worked better than other types of diets and it wasnt just due to a loss of water or some other short term temporary weight loss effect. The cholesterol levels also didnt sky rocket for the people eating this diet.
However, you still have to wonder if cancer and other problems would pop up with long term low carb dieters who eat tons of meat. On the other hand, the mainstream critics still ranted and either ignored or attacked the studies. Later on there were a few studies that claimed in the longer term the weight loss wasnt as large as in the initial studies between the different diets and cynics of course pointed out the old stat that dieters following any diet in general just didnt fare that well in the long term, almost everyone regains all the weight or more weight than they lost. One poster described dieting as "shuffling the chairs on the deck of the Titanic".

Low-carbohydrate and so-called Mediterranean diets may be more effective than low-fat diets, according to a major new study published in tomorrows New England Journal of Medicine.
Researchers studied 322 moderately obese employees of a research center in Israel, randomly assigning them to three diet groups, and providing them with encouragement and instruction over a two-year period.
Members of the low-fat group lost an average of 6.4 pounds, while those in the low-carb and Mediterranean groups lost about 10, said Dr. Meir Stampfer, associate director of the Channing Laboratory at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the paper's senior author.
While there has been concern that low-carb diets can be harmful to cardiovascular health, Stampfer said that the participants who followed the low-carb and Mediterranean diets actually had better cardiovascular health than those in the low-fat group. (The study was funded in part by the Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Foundation, which supports independent scientific research. The late-Robert Atkins was known for promoting a low-carbohydrate diet.)
For people with cholesterol problems, the low-carb diet seemed best; for those at risk for diabetes, the Mediterranean diet provided more health benefits.
I dont think a low carb diet necessarily means eating a mountain of eggs, bacon and steak every day though like some wacky Atkins Diet followers were shown to do on some TV shows.
I stated I just started my radical diet again after plateauing, the weight is going down like a rock thrown in a pool. Its down around 7-8 lbs in 2 days - definitely bizarre and disturbing.
Im not that hungry though. Just munching on some veggies and fruit and water. I may eat something tomorrow if this keeps up.
In my experience though any slight substantial eating halts it like that and I even regain most of it very quickly. It may partially be that suddenly its humid as heck the last few days and especially tonight so maybe Im losing a ton of water through sweat and the bathroom. However Ive been drinking a lot of water too.
Something Im paranoid about --- drastic loss in potassium resulting in erratic heart beat and death. Ive been eating lots of bananas.
I just saw this in the NY TIMES
Vigorous exercising more effective at avoiding cancer than diet?

I'm only 23 and have 2 boys - 18 months and 4. I stopped nursing my 18 month old maybe 6 months ago and I have lately been able to tell I'm slowly gaining weight. Another big reason I am though is because we eat too much crappy take-out and that is going to stop. I also am going to start an extra workout routing each day.
I really hate breakfast. I don't like cereal. And I NEVER have time to make anything (my kids eat breakfast at daycare). So I normally make bad choices for breakfast - like a bagel w/ cream cheese, a toaster strudel, etc. I'm also sometimes forced to get a McDonald's breakfast sandwich because I'm just needing to grab something quick on the way to work.
I know breakfast is an important meal of the day - but I hate it! So I'm thinking I should possibly find a good breakfast shake or protein shake for the morning. I could mix it up or grab it out of the fridge and drink it on the way to work and hopefully it'll hold me over until lunch. That way I'm not choosing the other terrible choices.
So my question is - what is the best choice of a shake for me? I've heard of Carnation Instant Breakfast but is that not very healthy? I also heard Slim Fast is not a good choice. I'm more interested in something in your fridge sealed that you can pop open and drink. A mix with water doesn't seem very filling. Milk would be okay. I tried my boss' Atkins drinks (milk chocolate) and those weren't too bad but a tad expensive.
Could anyone give me reviews? I live in a smaller town so there are not a million choices around here.
Thanks SO MUCH if you could help me! I'd be so happy each morning if I knew I wouldn't have to debate or be forced to grab a donut.

I dont think drinks are that filling and they tend not to be super low calorie too. I dont think they are all that much better than taking a vitamin and then drinking milk. A lot of them are pretty expensive too like Ensure. But everyone is different so if you prefer a drink its OK I guess.
A high fiber cereal with milk seems like it would be better but then you seem to hate cereal.
I think yogurt or a breakfast bar would be more filling but they both can have moderate amounts of calories and fat though there are lower fat versions of yogurt. All these things except maybe the cereal can be moderately expensive too. Eating some pre-prepared fruit is good for breakfast.

I throw 6 egg whites in the microwave for 2 and half minutes. Six is a lotyou could start w/ 3.
I use a protein shake called Jay Robb. They sell it Vitamin Shoppe. It is pricey ($33.99), but does last. I started w/ Bio-chem form Vitamin Shoppe that was only $15.99 and I used a 20% off Q. https://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?
In general when you r looking for protein drinks. Look for Whey Isolate opposed to Whey Concentrate. I did look into Biggest Looser Whey and the To Go ones have the Isolated. I did not buy them b/c of the additives, but they seem pretty good. Some are on Clearance at CVS.
Dont know if this is too much for you, but I mix my shakes in a blender w/ fruit (strawberries or blueberries).
If you really want to get into it add some Konjac Powder to your shakes.I buy mine online ($19.99). Stuff has zero calories (pure fiber) and will make your shake into a thick frap (longer it sits the thicker it gets). I put only a teaspoon in it. Again, kind of expensive but goes a long way and really fills you up.
Another option is to add Benefiber to your shake. The reason I am suggesting to add fiber is because it will fill you up. Most shakes are low in fiber. I add a little Benefiber to my water sometimes too. It has no taste and will not thicken like the Konjac Powder.
I have tried the shake thing alone and I am still hunger. I need the fiber. I do Fiber One cereal a lot. When I am on the go I will even throw some in zip lock to snack on.
HTH and feel free to ask me anything else.
Just walk down the bread isle at the grocery store and try to find a bread that does not contain "High Frutose Corn Syrup." You will be surprize.
First: read labels and go for things that are less than 4g of sugar/ serving. You will find that not too many things are, but try to get close to 4g.
Second: look at the food label again and go for items w/ a fiber content higher than 3g/ serving. A good breakfast cereal should have at least 8g.
Third: look at the ingredients and avoid foods w/ the words "Enriched" and look for the words "Whole" in the first 2 ingredients. Enriches flour will break down very similiar to sugar, so avoid it.
In general you want to do 2 things. Decrease your sugar intake and increase your fiber intake. If you have a low fiber diet now, increase gradually, because your body will need to get use to the increase fiber. Typical American diet is 6-8g/day while recommendation is 25g/ day for women and 35g/day for men.
Now for your exercise. You said you are having trouble even walking the dog. Let's start with 10 minutes (around your house will be fine). If 10 minutes is too much for, you can do 3 minutes. I will tell people that when a comercial comes on the TV I want them to get up and march in place (commercials usually last 3 minutes).
I pick 3 minutes, because it takes about 3 minutes for your heart rate to reach a steady state and begin to really start working aerobically. Proir to this you are working in a non-aerobic state and that is why it seems harder in the beginning.
Hope this works for you and let me know if you need anything else.
So the last 3 weeks its been up and down , up and down a few lbs but close to the end I lost a more normal 1-2 lbs which feels like nothing. However right towards the end I did a lot more physical activity when I had to lug a huge desk from the store and then break an old desk and clean that up and throw it away and then build the new desk and throw all the packaging away for that. After that I checked I the scale and it showed a loss of 4 lbs.
So it seems like pretty low activity combined with a starvation diet caused a rapid loss in weight.
In contrast slightly eating quickly caused plateauing but a moderate increase in physical activity accelerates the weight loss again as long as Im still eating a pretty skimpy diet , just enough to plateau.
My big problem now is though Im not weak at all, Im far more energetic than I was but Im not all that super-energetic either like I was initially when I went on the starvation diet. And my sleeping has deteriorated but no where near where it was I suspect its the caffeine in the Coke Ive started to drink again a few weeks ago.
Do you know how many calories you are eating a day?
Remeber your body is smart and the metabolism will slow if you eat too few calories. Also you will break down muscle if your calories are low. Muscle is the most metobic active tissue in the body.
Recommendation: eat small frequent meals (250 calories) every few hours for about 1600 to 1800 calories per a day. Diets below 1200 calories a day should get docotor approval.

Any advice on good vitamins or supplements?

However, Im just not that hungry. I suddenly lost my appetite when I was goofing around with arginine and Im used to not eating now. I eat small snacks of fruit and some salads. I also have eaten small scraps of meat and eggs etc since I do worry that I might not be getting some essential nutrients and also supplements.
The weightloss on the surface seems very dramatic which is a little worrying - 18-20 in a few weeks and then plateau , when I started cheating a bit. Then I started the more stringent diet again -- fruits and salads and theres been a very quick 8 lb loss but as I said its probably water loss.
--------------------------
Im a little confused rechecking my spreadsheet I actually lost 24 or so the first few weeks then plateau-ed and regained a bit so the net came around 18-20. So Im losing some of the weight I regained -- when I lost a quick 8 and even that has been reduced today to about 6 lbs. These types of grossly dramatic numbers are probably due to water loss or something so they are a bit unstable.
Im already in the comfortable range and at the border of getting into the lean range which I want to do. I want to get into the pretty lean range which I was at eons ago when I was jogging at the beach and following a really lean healthy diet. There seems to be some resistance --- getting harder a bit now to really break through into this lean range. I might have to start jogging but I may be exaggerating the difficulty since Ive been cheating , inconsistent the last 3 weeks when Ive been plateau-ing and have only been on the more stringent diet about 3 days so far.

I eat a special K protein bar for breakfast every day. Usually the double chocolate flavor but I also like the chocolatey chip. I haven't tried the other flavors.
You can buy them one at a time to see if you like them. They are my favorite of any protein bar (by far).
You can sometimes find them on sale.
I also keep one in my purse in case I am out and get hungry.
I started reading this thread to see if anyone had tried the cookie diet. Anyone?

Is it me or have vitamins along with a lot of things gone way up in price? I was looking around the other day for softgels after reading a thing by a doc who claimed he measured the blood of patients and those that took tablets had very low and inconsistent levels of the supplements they took whereas softgels were much better. When I checked the prices for even common supplements they were really sky high. Wal Mart is one of the best places to get vitamins for common supplements but only a tiny amount of their supplements are softgels.
It might be better for Celiac sufferers to get softgels too since some of these supplements use a gluten filler. Im assuming the softgels dont, but I may be wrong.
Im REALLY falling off the wagon now.Theres some psychological barrier and Im getting bored, unfocused. Luckily my low appetite seems semi-permanent. Its seems normal now even when I cheat I find it easy to revert to very low levels of food unlike the past where I felt like an alcoholic ready to binge and fall off bigtime at anytime with countless temptations everywhere like pizza, burgers, steaks and pastramis.
However, now out of just being unfocused and bored Ive been cheating a little every other day. The other day out of the blue I ate a large BBQ plate. I think I can get on the wagon again though but theres kind of a psychological barrier or something preventing me from descending into the truly lean range.
After reading about Kennedy's horrible brain cancer and the accompanying pieces about the lack of major progress in the fight against cancer, eventhough its been dismissed --- Im buying an earpiece for my cellphone. I saw Richard Branson - the mogul using one years ago and I thought that was good idea though the whole controversy about cellphones causing brain tumors and eye cancer scare was largely dismissed , its better to be safe than to find out later there was something to that hype.

Softgels -- Vitamin E you can find in softgels almost everywhere like Wal Mart. Softgel D -- you can find at Walgreens and theres a 2 for 1 sale going on this week but you can compare that sales price with online prices for softgels.
I also found VItamin C softgels on Amazon.
For vitamins I usually get naturemade. I know they have various softgels.
Every month all the drugstores run a buy one get one free sale on them.
The bottles have codes on them. You can go to the naturemade website and put in the codes and eventually you will qualify for a $5 coupon and then a $7 coupon.
I try to buy my vitamins at Walgreens when there is a $5 off $20 store coupon and a bogo sale.
They don't expire for a couple of years so I stock up when they are less expensive.

The thing is , I did buy Walgreens brand and another brand Vit E and several other softgels, since I recall seeing that maybe one of the 2 for 1 sales was cheaper at Walgreens. However when I checked Sams Club today , Vit E and Saw Palmetto (prostrate health etc) was still cheaper though these are relatively large bottles which you generally expect at a warehouse store.
Its possible to get it lower as you point at Walgreens because they often have coupons too on top of the 2 for 1 sale. For instance they often have the lowest prices on soda and water etc in my region and if you buy that they will often give you a 3-4 buck coupon for the next visit on anything. Also there was that series of -- buy 20/25 bucks worth of stuff and get 5 bucks off coupon they were running a few months ago.
When I bought the vitamins they also printed out a coupon for 4 bucks off if you buy something like 20 bucks worth of certain vitamin brands.
=======================
Wow my blood pressure is up. It should be going down since I lost weight. It was always pretty low. I think its because Ive been overdosing on popcorn and tortilla chip with salsa ever since Ive gone on this crazy diet. I hardly eat any normal meals at all. Im mainly munching on fruits and veggies but to relieve my boredom Ive been eating bag after bag of popcorn and tortilla chips with salsa. Im probably overloaded with salt.
Im going to really cut down my salt intake and see what happens.
