The Martian Chronicles [amazon.com]
by Ray Bradbury
Kindle edition

$3

Ray Bradbury is a storyteller without peer, a poet of the possible, and, indisputably, one of America's most beloved authors. In a much celebrated literary career that has spanned six decades, he has produced an astonishing body of work: unforgettable novels, including Fahrenheit 451 and Something Wicked This Way Comes; essays, theatrical works, screenplays and teleplays; The Illustrated Mein, Dandelion Wine, The October Country, and numerous other superb short story collections. But of all the dazzling stars in the vast Bradbury universe, none shines more luminous than these masterful chronicles of Earth's settlement of the fourth world from the sun.

Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams and metaphor-of crystal pillars and fossil seas-where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn -first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars ... and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles is a classic work of twentieth-century literature whose extraordinary power and imagination remain undimmed by time's passage. In connected, chronological stories, a true grandmaster once again enthralls, delights and challenges us with his vision and his heart-starkly and stunningly exposing in brilliant spacelight our strength, our weakness, our folly, and our poignant humanity on a strange and breathtaking world where humanity does not belong.

Apparently an entire chapter is missing and offensive words are censored. While I'm intrigued to buy this.... I will pass as I don't want to support censorship.
I think the censorship concerns might be overblown. Apparently in 1997 Bradbury reworked the book to make it more contemporary (it was made up of rewritten short stories to begin with). All the dates were advanced 30 years and one of the weaker stories which was written in the 1950s and dealt with race from a pre-civil rights viewpoint was replaced with two other stories. It wasn't so much censorship as it was fixing a problem where a story set in the future all of a sudden seemed very much from the past. Besides, Amazon's notorious for combining reviews for different editions so who knows what you'll get.

Drat about the censorship, but I'm going to get it anyway because I've wanted to read this series for some time now.

Wow, I've read this 3-5 times through high school and adulthood. Apart from some of the simplistic technology, it's just amazing. Seminal sci fi and literature for anyone, not just sci fi fans.

Does it say anywhere on Amazon's page (besides buyer reviews) that its censored? If they don't make the buyer beware, that is totally lame.

This is the one thing I absolutely hate about Amazon. I was looking a computer cases and the reviews for different models from the same manufacturer were listed giving wildly different points of views on the features (seriously mid size, full towers and mini cases were all listed). And with books, print and kindle all mixed together along with various editions. How hard can it be to have each review filtered to be the one related to what is actually going to be purchased by the add to cart/buy now button?

The other thing I absolutely hate about Amazon is not being able to exchange items bought through limited time deals. You can only return and rebuy at a higher price.
