Drinking Water - Most economical option?

3,748 578 February 17, 2018 at 11:32 AM in Finance
I'm a single health conscious guy and wanted to know what everyone here think is the most economical option for drinking water. The water in my condo tastes like crap. I've even had plumbers tell me not to drink city water. I have a costco membership, sometimes will buy case of bottled water or just drink from my pur water filter jug. Is it more economical for me to continue to drink from my pur water filter jug, bottled water, or shpuld I invest in a water dispenser and buy the huge galls of water from lowes / home depot? I go through a lot of water.

Messed up my aunt's well, near Lufkin, Texas. Now she has to chlorinate out every month or it smells like sulphur.

Chlorine kills bacteria, it doesn't get rid of sulfur.

When I was kid we would go to the hobby store to buy sulfur. I can't remember the other stuff we had to buy. But we made a small pile of gun powder. We lit it to watch it burn. Applause

The problem with bottled water is the plastic bottle it is stored in, you get that bottle warm or hot and you start getting stuff leeching in your water. And who knows where that water bottles were stored at, no doubt someplace hot.

When I was a kid, we used to make napalm out of gasoline and soap and bomb fire ant colonies.

Answer depends on your location. If you can trust your local water source, then tap is the way to go. And tastes great if you happen to live in a soft watered region. Or you would have to soften it for better tastes with filters which adds to the total cost. Bottled water is a waste of money except in contaminated areas such as the BP oil leaks back in 2010.

Chemically speaking, pure water (distilled water) tastes flat or meh. It's the impurities (minerals, fish poop, etc...) it picks up that adds to the taste, hard or soft, depending on the region. So by filtering these impurities we alter the hardness of the water making it soft. Or adding more minerals, making it's taste less desirable.

The green stuff at the top of the bottle 4th on 2nd row?

I once saw a sealed bottled water mostly coated with algae inside on a store's shelf. vomit One would think all stores would have UV window film to protect displayed products and to be energy efficient.

^^^ We have a winner.
Bottled water was on sale, so manager took the overstock ones outside in direct sunlight. A lack of proper training on how to store these. (Picture was of an example found on internet, not the actual unnamed store.)
