Choosing between college in Long Beach or Santa Barbara

5,259 51 April 21, 2018 at 06:01 PM
A friend of mine currently in Australia is trying to decide which place to send his son to for college. He'll be on the water polo team so will be receiving some tuition expenses, but not all. Can anybody here give me some input on the pros and cons of both? I think SB is the better school, but will be more expensive. Whereas LB might be cheaper and located amongst more fun stuff.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

They should go to www.sandiego.edu instead. woot

Ok, maybe not for water polo.

If this info [usnews.com] is correct, $42k for out-of-state for UCSB seems crazy. But I think it's much more highly regarded. Has your friend been on www.niche.com and other similar sites? Will they have an opportunity to visit the campuses prior to making a decision? I'm sure each will have quite a different vibe, as you would expect.

Santa Barbara is one of the nicest places in the world, and I've been to a lot of places.

Long Beach is... Long Beach.

UCSB is a UC school. Cal State Long Beach is a Cal State school.

This is a no brainer IMO. Not even close.

Another vote for Santa Barbara. Not only are UC's generally considered better quality schools, lots of areas of Long Beach are pretty high crime. Santa Barbara is a more ritzy area and you're generally not going to have to worry as much about safety issues.

It's nice to hear that foreigners are able to get 75% of their tuition paid.

It's an athletic scholarship. How did you think those worked?

I live between Long Beach and Santa Barbara. I agree UC schools have higher standards and are more prestigious than CSU, but it is what it is. There are differences between CSU schools too, with some tougher than others to get in to.

If aesthetics are important, then it's Santa Barbara. If convenience to the L.A./Orange County/San Diego area, with more of an average college, then it's Long Beach. Sometimes I need to go to Long Beach for work. It's fairly safe. Every community has its bad areas.

Anyway, where I currently live between and where I went to college is CSU Northridge. It's not UCLA, but I've done OK.

I thought they got 100% tuition plus living expenses and a car. Plus someone to do their homework and take tests for them so they pass. That may just be for football and basketball though.

Sounds like I need to brush up on my water polo skills. And...

1. Lose ~25 lbs
2. Pick out the best horse.
3. Learn to play water polo.
4. Get a scholarship.
5. ?
6. Profit?

On the plus side, water polo players often shave their heads to cut drag in the water, so you're ahead of the game there. Big Grin
