Disclaimer: No License is required to purchase this radio, nor to Monitor (listen) to the many Amateur (Ham) Radio frequencies. However, an FCC License is required to Transmit (Talk) on Amateur Radio Frequencies in the USA.

THE DUAL PUSH-TO-TALK DIFFERENCE

The UV-82 Series come with a dual push-to-talk button. The dual PTT is a huge leap forward in the HT technology. It allows you to transmit on two frequencies by the use of the rocker PTT switch. By pressing up you can transmit on "Frequency A" and by pushing down you can transmit on "Frequency B". Frequency A or B can also be used as a scanner of channels, frequencies, CTCSS and DTS tones.

The BaoFeng UV-82 Series

The BaoFeng UV-82 series has upped the bar on affordable ham radio technology! Compared to previous BaoFeng products (UV-5R, GT-3, and the v2+ Series) the UV-82 comes with a much louder speaker (1 watt), a much more solid case with larger buttons, and a new chipset and PCB board that outperforms the range, accuracy, and output of the previous BaoFeng chipsets. It is not simply a remake but a new radio from the ground up. It outperforms the the 2nd Gen UV-5R chipset (used in the UV-5Rs, GT-3 BF-F8+, and v2+ series).

I have a UV-B5 [ebay.com] and a UV-82, and I have been very surprised how far they can transmit. There is a repeater that I hit often to check in to nets and just to talk, and that repeater is about 30 miles away. I can hit it clearly with no static or problems whatsoever. My house is down in a valley, so I'm not on a mountain or hill or anything.

The ham radio exams are EASY - multiple choice, and if you study for a week or so, you can definitely pass them. I have my General license that I got 4 years ago a month after I got my Technician's license (you need the Tech license to use these Baofengs).

You can also monitor police and emergency frequencies by inputting information from RadioReference.com [radioreference.com]. Just make sure you don't transmit or you can be heavily fined, and people do track transmissions, believe it or not. It's easier to do than you would think.

Most, if not all ,major cities have switched to digital trunk signals for there radio chatter. On top of that they switch to encrypted signals when there are any major incidents making it impossible to listen to police/fire/other services during major incidents.

These radios are analog only and if you are planning to get these to listen to emergency services, you are better off buying a digital police scanner, but those are 300+ dollars.

Your comment cannot be blank.

Featured Comments

Important: You need an amateur radio license to use these radios to transmit. They are NOT certified to use on FRS/GMRS bands, so they are illegal to use for that purpose. It's not terribly difficult to get a technician-class amateur radio license (See: http://www.arrl.org/getting-licensed)

2-way radio manufacturers always claim something like 5 miles. It's much less than that - curvature of the earth limits you to about 5 miles, but any obstruction between the two radios will limit that greatly.

In open air, with both radio's on top of a mountain, at 5 watts, 25+ miles. 2 boats on the ocean, about 5 miles. Inside your house talking to the neighborhood, likely less than a mile.
Does this apply to flat earthers too?
Like it says earlier in the thread, no not legally unless you just want to listen.

I get about a mile between two slightly older models. Not sure if they improved them or not.
