This would be nice to integrate with my fire tv dongle thingy, but is it really worth $230...

I'm really wondering about this too. Got TiVo OTA, two minis, two TiVo adapters. Every time I get it working just right for my wife, say two, three months or so, it starts acting up again and then some more tweking. If this is more reliable and since I already have one stick and one fire TV box, maybe better?

Leads me to think otherwise, but subtract $30-40 from the price if not and still have the same question about this being worth $200.

Well not sure but some internet cable subscriptions come with DVR already... its a rather unusual aggressive pricing strategy on Amazons behalf...I would suggest given release date is around peak holiday sales that this price will definitely go down...

So it's Aereo, except ridiculously expensive?

Price wise shouldn't this be compared to the TiVo OTA?

Most charge a monthly fee for the DVR. This is a one time charge. I could see this being worth it if they included a cable card slot

How does this compare to an HD Homerun, functional wise? The subscription for that is only $35/yr, and has been WELL worth it.

TVs have been equipped with USB port for the last 12 years or so. How hard is for them to put together some code to dump the video mpeg4/H.264/whatever that comes off of air to a drive plugged into the USB port and thus provide us an inexpensive DVR solution? it is a major conspiracy of content providers that prevent the TV manufacturers from adding this feature.

I'll wait until the half-price sale, which comes with all Amazon gadgets at some point.

Yes. Since the streaming companies have built their empire (user base) they want to take advantage of it and are coming out with these versions of DVRs. SlingTV has its own version called Air TV. Next Roku might come up with its own version that only works with Roku devices (although their arrangement with TCL might prevent it / delay it). Eventually they will drive out independent devices like Tablo etc.

After giving it a lot of thought, I ended up buying the new DVR from AirTV ($99 at Amazon earlier this week). I like that it's integrated into Sling TV. I also like that you have the option of using a standalone app to access your shows on other platforms if you're not a Sling TV customer. But the biggest reason I went with the AirTV product is that I can use my own 2 Tb hard drive to record shows. The Amazon Fire Recast will not support adding an external hard drive, and that's a deal-breaker for me. (Also, I like the $99 point of entry as opposed to the surprisingly high price of the Amazon product.)
