That's what I'm saying. With a partial mash, you are learning your way with only 2-4 lbs of grain instead of 11 lbs. If you get the temps wrong and end up with off flavors from an improper mash, you still have a better chance at an ok beer. You learn the same stuff you did, but on a less riskier scale. I'm happy I did partial because there are so many things I could have done differently.
so you know how much to adjust your temps for 11# or more? 2-4# doesn't really affect the strike temps as much as all grain... you probably will still struggle with the initial mash temp because you have never dealt with this much grain... the first all grain will be a learning experience regardless...don't expect everything the first time to fly perfectly...

I just said "a better idea". Of course I don't know it all yet. My initial temp on the stove for 2.2 lbs of grain was 165 for a target temp of 153. But, it was all the way down to 144. So, now I know when I go to all grain, I will start with about 175 or so. Had I started with all grain, it would have been a harder lesson to learn.

i was just done with the whole DME/LME controlling my beer... so my decision was to ditch it for the most part... but each brewer does their own thing...some people love mini mash and they stay with it...to me, if i was going to make the mash tun, might as well and go all the way... but everyone is different...

Not only that. But, the DME could have been on the shelf for a year. So, you have a better chance at a fresher beer with all grain. I'm glad I went partial mash. I'm going to be a whole lot less intimidated with all grain now. I couldn't imagine what it would have been like with all grain on this last batch. It may have been a mess with the temps.

Can I pull off my first homebrew after work or should I wait for the weekend?
Did you do your brew or were you talking about after work today? Since you have the turkey fryer I think you're good to go on a week day. If you are planning to do it in the kitchen I'd suggest waiting till the weekend. My first extact batch in the kitchen took me about 8 hours because it took so long to boil. Oh, and I started at like 9PM thinking I would be done by 12PM. shake head

Things I wish I'd had handy at the time but didn't:
- A bucket of sanitizer to keep things soaked in.
- A Spray bottle of sanitizer for odd and end things or "just to be sure".
- A turkey fryer or something, anything even slightly better then a kitchen stove.Worthy

Things I messed up on:
- Although I remembered to turn off the flame when adding my LME, in the "heat of the moment" I forgot to wait for the wort to reach a boil again after turning the flame back on. Instead I promptly threw in the first hop addition and started my 60min boil that wasn't boiling. Scratchhead

8 hours? EEK!

Was it a gas stove in the kitchen? What volume did you boil? Mine comes to a boil without an issue. But, I have a glass top electric stove. Either way, I have a burner for outside now. This last batch (partial mash) was done outside. Kind of annoying to have to take my hops outside. But, less of a stink in the house which my wife hates.

Before I do an all grain, I think a wort chiller will be needed.

Pasta? Oh wow, that's a toughy. When I make pasta I generally plan it 2 days in advance. laugh out loud
Well just say, I could have been more organized in how I was boiling water. I was boiling water to rinse out my Iodifor sanitizer etc, not only for the wort. In hind sight I wish I had Star San to begin with and wasn't as paranoid about rinsing. I was also using RO water from my RO filter which only had a holding tank of 3 gallons and so it took forever for it to do it's thing for the remaining 2-3 gallons etc etc.
Despite all my research online, reading and re-reading Palmers "How to Brew" etc, I was still less organized then I thought. It's painful to watch, but I have the event on video too as I was self documenting it. My voice near the end was so f'ing groogy.

Is it somewhat easy to create a wort chiller? Or is it better to just buy one?

if i were to do it over, i would have just bought it.

easy if you don't rush making it...copper is very easy to cink it... you probably will save $20 building it on your own, but you could always buy one just for the ease of it... i want the chiller brian has drool

If you're in South OC or North San Diego area and know where Fallbrook is (aka BFE) here's a fairly good deal on craigslist.
Linky [craigslist.org]
No list is included, but from the picture you can see a wort chiller, glass carboy, mod'd trash can to fit carboy in submerged water, and probably a few more goodies in the plastic bin. All for a list price of $95.
Doesn't come close to Brian's steal from the other day, but not a bad deal just considering the carboy and chiller.
