I think I need 2 more items to complete my brewing setup. I still need a wort chiller and an aerator. For the aerator, is it very important to use a tank of O2? Or can I buy the hose and stone and use a fish tank air pump?
Tank with O2 would be easier and quicker and better, however many brewers use the hose/stone/fish tank pump method. Which ever fits your budget or addiction to gadgets is what you should go with.

Well, I can't get everything at once and I'm not sure how much the O2 tank would be. I've been getting my stuff piece by piece. I want to do my next batch sometime in the next couple weeks. But, I don't want to try chilling a 5 gallon wort in an ice bath. Also, can you use any stone? Or does it have to be a special type of stone?

In all honesty, if you're budget conscious don't worry about the O2 or Stone etc yet. There are plenty of ways to aerate your wort that you can do without such equipment such as shaking the hell out of your bucket/carboy, pouring it from the kettle to the fermentor with gusto, whisk it, pour it through a strainer, etc etc. Spend your budget on other items first that will have greater effect on your beer such as the IC chiller.

Iagree i want a aerator but its not in my top priority list... when i rack my beer from the kettle i hold the hose 2-3 feet from the fermenter so it splashes like crazy... IWC is much more important nod

Yeah, the wort chiller is my first priority. I already have a fish air pump that's unused. How much is a stone? Can I pick one up at the pet store? Or is it different than those? As for pouring from the kettle.....no more pouring for me!

I use a Siphon Tap [midwestsupplies.com]

The little thing on the small end is the exit side of the siphon and helps spread the outgoing flow splashing it further.
The big business end does an ok job in filtering out a bit of junk too.

Awesome. After I buy a burner and a 32 quart kettle, I get an email like this from my brewers guild:

Quote :
"I've recently upgraded my brew setup to use a keg as a brewpot. Since I have my shiny new keg to brew in, I now have two aluminum 30 qt brewpots and a small propane burner (perfect for a 5 gallon boil) that are just collecting dust. I'd like to offer these brewpots and the burner to any club member, free of charge, and was wondering if you could post a
classified add to see if anyone is interested. If anyone is would like the items, I can bring them to the next meeting."

Yes. Unless you made it known to your club that you've just bought the new stuff.

They have no idea. I think I wouldn't mind having the burner.

never had it before.. maybe ask mal/rybal when they drink my coffee porter
I'm pushing Mal to be ready for a beer tasting tomorrow night. Trying to get him to have a fire in his fire-ring that I stacked into the perfect log cabin + tee pee formation 3 months ago.

Although I've never had the porter Mav is talking about either.
