This is terrible advice. For anyone that actually works on stuff, you will definitely use 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 drives. There's a lot of scenarios where a 1/2" drive just wont fit in a tight space, and lots of scenarios where a 3/8 would snap.

By your logic, just get a crescent wrench and save yourself $85. It does everything this set does, right?
Just in the last month, I had occasion to use Standard (Inch) size tools on an early 90s Ford (mixed), a redwood deck /arbor, a washing machine and a dining room table.

And I used 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drives.

Just because YOU only need a few Metric sockets, doesn't mean everybody else does.
This is why I only own one screwdriver. I carved it using my one knife. I figure if the need arises for sockets I will just squeeze it really tight between my knife and my screwdriver. Don't waste your money on tools at all!

Also you can get this set for free if you buy the kobalt 24v 4 piece set for $229 or thereabouts.
I'm not a heavy socket user, so I can never quite figure out if these sets are a good deal or not.

Seems like a decent deal for the $$ any other suggestions? I briefly looked at a few others (harbor freight, northern tool, home Depot). Without spending 150+ I didn't really see a better deal at least now. Thoughts? Seems like reviews on this set are good.

Getting locked into 24V Kobalt tools probably isn't a good idea. If they were cheaper maybe...

As far as just the Mechanic's set, at $80 with a $20 offcoupon, it's a pretty slickdeal.
You might want to check your local Lowes, mine have been clearing out the individual mechanics tools. So you can buy single sockets, wrenches, extensions. ratchets, etc for dirt cheap, if you want to fill in this set. .YMMV
They're bouncing lots of Kobalt tools for same version of Craftsman.

Yeah I'm wondering long-term if kobalt tools will go away or will become cheaper/inferior (at least in perception) to Craftsman.

But has Craftsman really still had the reputation it had 10+ years ago?

I'm debating this or the husky socket set from HD

This is a fantastic deal. I have this set and it's awesome, also have several of their 24v tools and I would trade them for anything else

From my limited research. You really only one of the socket sizes in regards to 1/4 to 3/8 to 1/2. 1/2 will be the strongest size as it is thicker. 3/8 might be more universal as it is smaller. You can still use a 1/2 ratchet with an adapter. Both the sockets and ratchets will be on the lower end of the quality but it depends on use of course.

Metric is the way to go if you are working on cars. You may get a better quality with a metric socket set in only once size and a better ratchet for the same price. You are getting more a volume deal of possibly sizes you will never use.

I bought the same set about two years ago after Xmas for $80 plus they had 10$ off 50. All the pieces were in separate plastic bags. Took me about 20 min to put all the pieces in the correct spot. The case feels cheap but the pieces stay put just in case you tip it over.
