By your logic, just get a crescent wrench and save yourself $85. It does everything this set does, right?
And I used 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drives.
Just because YOU only need a few Metric sockets, doesn't mean everybody else does.

I'm not a heavy socket user, so I can never quite figure out if these sets are a good deal or not.

As far as just the Mechanic's set, at $80 with a $20 offcoupon, it's a pretty slickdeal.
You might want to check your local Lowes, mine have been clearing out the individual mechanics tools. So you can buy single sockets, wrenches, extensions. ratchets, etc for dirt cheap, if you want to fill in this set. .YMMV
They're bouncing lots of Kobalt tools for same version of Craftsman.

But has Craftsman really still had the reputation it had 10+ years ago?
I'm debating this or the husky socket set from HD

Metric is the way to go if you are working on cars. You may get a better quality with a metric socket set in only once size and a better ratchet for the same price. You are getting more a volume deal of possibly sizes you will never use.
