If you don't want to buy it then just don't. There are others who need these devices for various reasons. Since you use your smart phone/google maps, it's not necessary for you to know those reasons. ✌️.
Have you ever been to West Virginia? Trust me, it's a place you definitely don't want to get lost, and it's super easy to do so without a map.

If you don't have a signal you are probably in a national park or someplace its easy to find the way. When was the last time you had no signal? and where was it?

Does this do traffic without using your smartphone? Or do they make you buy a traffic cable separately?

Needs smartphone for traffic: "²To access live traffic, you must download the free Smartphone Link app. User's data plan charges, if any, will apply. Contact your mobile service provider for more information about your service plan's data and roaming rates. Requires Bluetooth-enabled smartphone (sold separately)."

do we have to go over this on every gps thread?

when was the last time you saw a police officer stick his personal phone up on the windshield to drive around town patrolling? or even the department phone for that matter? yes there are other options but this is one of them for a bunch of small departments instead of the computer.

if i have 20 places to go in one day, i'd hate to try to rely on my mobile phone...for commercial use.

Can you use the Garmin Traffic Power Cable with this unit?

FWIW, I have the LMT50 which supposedly has an internal traffic receiver but also works with the smartphone link. I use the smartphone feature and it's been great. I always had problems getting the traffic signal on my old GPS, I would have to be 30+ minutes from my house in order for it to work due to lack of signal (and I don't live in a rural area). With this I have traffic info all the time and it doesn't use very much data.

Tempted to upgrade since my Tomtom unit is so old.
I use my phone mostly for navigating; however, as people said above some places don't have reliable signal. I also found that my phone's GPS gets messed up in big cities (SF and NY). Happened with multiple phones on Verizon. Standalone GPS had no issues in that setting.

For me can't use data while taking a phone call. Having a separate GPS is more convenient

Worse case of weak/no phone signal in rural area, you can still pre-load map into google map.

Does Garmin still get live traffic at weak-signal zone?
