If you only have the smaller 1.5Ah batteries then these are a huge upgrade whether your tools are brushless or not.
I don't think so, but the HP version is still compatible with brushed (non-brushless) tools and will work the same as the non-HP batteries. However, since this HP battery is the same price as its non-HP version, may as well choose the HP version, if you need extra batteries now. One day you may add a brushless tool to your collection, and then you can take advantage of the HP features, in terms of longer runtime and extra power.

Basically, both the HP and non-HP batteries will work with all 18V tools in the Ryobi ONE+ collection, but the HP batteries will provide enhanced performance when used with brushless tools (excluding lawn and garden tools).
True to a certain extent. But most bundles are with 1.3Ah or 2.0Ah and non HP batteries. So if you need that increased range these are killer.
For example, I have a fogger that came with a 1.3 but only gets about 10 min runtime. And I'm considering the floor sweeper that really needs larger batteries.

Are the HP and non-HP equally compatible with the 18v lawn mowers?

Yes, both batteries will work with any 18V ONE+ tool, including the 18V lawn mower.

This may be a fine deal if you have a single Ryobi tool, don't plan on buying more, and need some batteries for power on the go. But if you plan on buying into the ONE+ line, I wouldn't bother with the extra batteries. Eventually, you're going to buy a tool that isn't offered bare (without a battery) or end up buying a tool on sale with a battery that's cheaper than its bare tool equivalent.

I haven't bought a spare battery, but I've acquired five batteries and three chargers through various deals. (It's more than I need; I wish the bare tools would go on sale more often!)

Edit: Auto-complete sabotage and poor proofreading.

Still waiting for a sale on the 40V batteries. Never seen a sale on those. These 18V batteries always seem to be on sale. Maybe I'm just missing the sales?
