First things first...
Western Digitals horrible page not withstanding,a USB - C TO USB 3.0 adapter does not exist.
A USB C TO USB 3.0 TYPE A does exist.
Usb type C IS the form factor of the port and connector
Usb type 3.0,3.1,2.0 etc are protocols/standards/spec that determine data throughput and other goodies like power delivery limits, communications and more.
A connector can be type c but also be usb 2.0,or be type A and be USB 3.1.
A proper usb C to A adapter should not slow down the connection at all as long as you are plugging the drive into an equivalent Spec Usb port.
I.e. the usb c port on your computer may be type 3.1 gen 2 ..and the usb A port you plugged the drive into may be usb type 2.0.
All the adapter is doing is connecting points..just a dumb pipe with wires..no processing,however...WD may have skimped on the wiring(possible),but considering that tons of USB devices use a type C on one end a type A on the other well...it shouldnt matter,as I said those are just form factors.

Not designed for MAC

"Formatted for Windows. Links to use with Mac all take you to a product registration page...no help. Resident software for Mac does not install. Reformatting via disk utility fails. Backup software only works with Windows. Called WD support and they could not get it to work. Called Amazon support and they said drive does not work with Mac and to return. Huge waste of time. Have never heard of this problem before."

Setup slow for a Mac

"You have to go through WD's setup program before the Mac will write to it. Not worth the time spent.
Mine makes a chirping noise when it's reading/writing. None of my other WD Passports have made this noise.
Worrisome. 3 stars"

"The backup drive works ok on mac. I know they make a mac specific version but this one works totally fine on a mac. The usb-c cable is ok. The usb-c to usb-a adapter broke so I dock a star and buy a new adapter but it's only a mild inconvenience."

This is USB 3. According to description.
First of all, you should be referring to this as "storage", not "memory". Second, for this drive to work with the PS4, just get a USB-C to A cable.

I have one currently on my Mac. Reformatted it using disk utility without any issue. I'm not using the WD encryption software so I can't comment on compatibility issues with that.
It already comes with a usb c to 3.0 adapter.
There is no read and write speed for USB-C, rather you're most likely referring to the "transfer speed", in which case, it's much more than what this mechanical drive inside is capable of.
