Great deal. These are almost never at a discount. IMO Kobo Clara HD hardware is better than the Kindle Paperwhite. The amber screen light is softer on the eyes than the white LED. Our family has owned 3 Kindles and 4 Kobos (H2O, Clara HD, and a Libra H2O). We use Calibre to manage all our ebooks and so there is no issue with getting ebooks from any ecosystem. However, Kobo has Overdrive integration built in so it is easier to get ebooks from the public library compared to on the Kindle.
The kindle paperwhite is garbage because of one word - DRM. So what if you can lend a book to a friend for two weeks? I can send the entire epub or pdf to a friend forever with kobo. Like others have said, Amazon can pull your access to a book at any given time. How does it feel to know that you don't actually own anything unless Amazon agrees? This is the same crap that happened to me with Amazon prime music. One day I had tons of music in my library that I thought I owned, the next they changed their service to a monthly fee format and many of my favorite songs are gone Bc they pulled streaming access to those songs to make more money. Now I just run my own 20TB plex server for music that I actually own, and I love my kobo for books I can upload from friends without worrying if Amazon says it's ok or not.
Yes, though it takes a few steps to transfer. After you have Calibre installed you'll need to install the DeDRM plugin for Calibre. After that's set up, then you view the list of ebooks you have purchased from Amazon in your Content & Devices, and choose the option to "Download & Transfer via USB" for that ebook. This will then give you the file that can be imported into Calibre, which you will then use to convert and transfer to the Kobo reader.

Is there a way that the books you buy from amazon show up in the Kobo?

Unless there is some type of Kindle app, I'm going to guess, no. Amazon put a bunch of DRM on their stuff so it can't be used outside their devices or apps.

Have you tried that yourself recently? Because I have and it never worked for me, not to mention, requires a bunch of hoops such as owning a kindle to copy a decryption code... it's not a smooth process and requires installation of several 3rd party apps.

I do use this regularly. And yes, there are certainly hoops to jump through to make it happen. You're also correct that it does require a Kindle to enter the serial for the DeDRM plugin; we own several Kindles from before we switched to Kobo so that wasn't an issue for us, but it may be if a Kobo is your sole device (perhaps there are ways around that). While the apps are 3rd party, Calibre itself is open source and widely used, thus strongly vetted.

The MobileRead forums are a good source of help in troubleshooting issues with Calibre conversion.
