this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

Mine had the 8/2019 BIOS 1.02 as well, and I just updated to 1.05. Not bricked yet. Not sure what's the difference.

You could flash the BIOS from Windows or by booting the EFI program. If you're working in Windows, you could choose the GUI app or the TUI app. The GUI app did not work for me (quit immediately upon starting to flash), but the TUI app did the trick. I ran
Code:
AMD_PICASSO_PF4PU1F_ESI_3200U_3500U_BIOS_N.1.05_EC_1.08.00_20191127\BIOS\PF4PU1F_3200U_BIOS\FlashUtil\AfuWin64\F.bat
The RomLayout was changed and I forced it to flash. Upon the next cold boot, the BIOS complained that the fTPM NV structure was corrupted or changed, and prompted me to reset the fTPM. After I did that, all was well, apparently.
Cool.. There is a history.txt file that supposedly say what changed...

Did you also flash the EC file?

It seems that Basic Mode is now default; iirc, Silent Mode was default before.

I did not flash the EC file. I guess it must be done from the EFI shell.

I'm still at work and have not had a chance to test flashing any of these firmwares. But it sounds like you had success.

So I just got the laptop and noticed that the copy of windows that's installed isn't activated... Tried emailing their customer service using the address that's in the booklet and just got an auto response saying it does not exist...

Anybody else having this problem?

So far so good! I'll be looking out for subtle side effects such as power management changes (e.g. defaulting to Basic Mode).

I just flashed the EC. It must be done from an EFI shell, but Motile's BIOS/UEFI does not seem to come with one (correct me if I'm wrong). So I downloaded Intel's open source shell from the TianoCore UDK/EDK2 project. You're gonna need a USB stick that you're willing to wipe. Here's how to create a bootable USB stick with the EFI shell:
Quote from https://github.com/chipsec/chipsec/wiki/Creating-a-Bootable-USB-drive-with-UEFI-Shell :
  1. Format your media as FAT32
  2. Create the following directory structure in the root of the new media: /efi/boot
  3. Download the UEFI Shell (Shell.efi) from the following link: https://github.com/tianocore/edk2.../Shell.efi
  4. Rename the UEFI shell file to Bootx64.efi
  5. Copy the UEFI shell (now Bootx64.efi) to the /efi/boot directory
I then copied the PFxPUxx_1.08.00 directory to the USB stick and rebooted.

The Motile defaults to booting first from removable media (USB stick has highest priority), which is insecure, but works out fine for testing purposes. If you need to inspect or change your boot priorities, press DEL while booting to enter BIOS.

Once you've booted into the EFI shell (which is really just another EFI program), you're greeted with your drive mappings, and a command prompt. My bootable USB stick came up as FS0, so I did the following (exercise extreme caution, plug in the power, etc, to avoid bricking):

Code:
Shell> FS0:
FS0:\> cd PFxPUxx_1.08.00
FS0:\> f.nsh
The f.nsh script invokes ifux64.efi with the correct parameters to flash the EC and then reboot.

If you'd like to play around some more with the EFI shell, note that it comes with some useful commands, and some usual terminal conventions (such as tab completion and history) apply. You could list the commands by typing help -b. You could flash the BIOS this way too, I suppose.

Be careful, and good luck!

For me, it comes down to 15.6in and 3.9 lbs vs. 14 in and 2.5 lbs.

How about if I usually walk around browsing internet and emailing while keep some computation work running as well with it? especially compared to the S340 i7 one? https://slickdeals.net/f/13628773-lenovo-ideapad-s340-laptop-i7-1065g7-15-6-1080p-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-450-free-shipping?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo1

I jumped on this deal and received the laptop this afternoon. My wife absolutely loves it for its lightweight and the rose gold. It's pretty nice for the price, doesn't feel cheap IMO, and screen is nice and bright. Sound is also very good. Backlight keyboard and keys feel just fine.

Now for the bad news.. the wifi range is TERRIBLE! I have a mesh network and this laptop constantly bounces between my 2.4ghz and 5ghz network. Speedtest goes from 1Mbps to my standard 150Mbps randomly from my bedroom. I even went into the wifi card settings and forced it to both 2.4 and 5 ghz but it would randomly drop its signal. In dual mode sometimes the wifi just drops and would take a minute or two to reconnect. If I go downstairs closer to one of my wifi satellites it's more stable but that's not acceptable. My macbook pro is right next to this laptop and constantly stays at 5ghz and 150Mbps.

I ended up buying the $15 Intel Wireless-Ac 9260 wifi card posted earlier off Amazon and hopefully that will fix the wifi issues. If it's the antenna and I still have problems sadly it will go back.

Just google or search on slickdeals for "16gb sodimm ddr4".. Get the cheapest you can find for the single module. Anything with 2400 or 2666 speed is good

how much slower would a 2166 16gb be?

that's for the desktop cpu. the answer for that was a couple of frames per seconds between 2166 and 2666.
