this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

So far, I have two big problems with this laptop:

1. The Control (CTRL) key only works when pressed precisely in the center. Since this is one of my most used keys, it's been a very frustrating experience. I doubt anything can be done about this since it appears to be a design problem.

2. Touchpad gestures are incredibly slow, especially the 3 finger swipe gesture. I'm hoping that this can be fixed with a better touchpad driver. Has anyone else had any success addressing this issue? If so, please post and let us know how you did it.

Edit: Strangely, the three finger gesture works much faster after I installed the latest AMD APU driver. Not sure if it will last, but at least for now, I'm no longer experiencing the super-long delays that I was dealing with before installing the driver.

Yes. Using this adapter, you can charge via USB C Power Delivery. You'll of course also need power supply that can deliver 60+ watts via USB C PD. Shipping from China took about 3 weeks. There is also one with a short cable and a straight plug available. Here's one source [aliexpress.com] (make sure to get the 5.5x2.5mm version). I haven't tested this one, but someone else posted that the one they got off of Amazon worked fine.
yeah, i was considering getting it from china too but that 3wk shipping is just too long so i bite the one from amazon.

my control key seems to work fine. but i do notice that if you happen to have any particulate matter that somehow get under a key it can really affect how the the key. if your control key feeils different when pressed compared to other keys, like feeling it just won't go down smooth and as deep, try to check to make sure there's nothing that got underneath the key.

My touchpad seems to work fine with the 3 finger swipe.. i still even have the plastic cover over the touchpad on.

Has anyone done a side by side comparison of this laptop and the Costco HP 14 laptop - 10th Gen Intel Core i3 (possibly i5) ?

if you get the i5 version, it's competitive with R5 3500u. the i5 also have the avx-512 instruction set. The report is that the i3 version is now coming in and the i5 version are nearly bought out by people. if you happen to get the new stock i3 then it sucks compared to the motile m142 with R5.

the iris graphic on i5-1035G4 is competitive with vega.. However, the i3-1031G1 is intel UHD, which really sucks compared to vega

I would probably have got a costco one with i5 myself. the only thing is that that thing doesn't have any 4K60hz output, which i need for my work since my work requires connecting to a 4k monitor.. The usb C on that hp is data only with no PD or DP, like our motile.

both the motile and the hp with i5 have HDMI 2.0

HP also only come with 4gb ram and 128gb ssd. but it does have 2 sodimm slots. HP does have a 2.5 in bay, but the connecting cable is not included

HP also weigh slightly more at 3.2 lb vs motile 2.6 lb and is slightly bigger.

Summary: if you can still get your hand on HP i5 version for $300, then it's a good deal.. if you can only get the i3 version, then it's not a good deal

I noticed when I opened my case that the screws had high strength threadlocker (red/ brown color) instead of the blue medium strength threadlocker that is typically used by everyone else. That means that it took a lot more force/torque to remove the screws than typical. You just have to be careful when you remove them not to break the screws off.
Yea i finally got mine open and same thing it was a pain.

I know there have been some complaints about the MOTILE logo on the back of the laptop. I can now report that the logo can be easily removed with a razor blade. The letters are just stickers. They are made of thin metal and some of them will probably break when removed, so don't expect to be able to re-adhere them once removed. In any case, I had no problem removing them (carefully) with a razor blade. There was a little remaining sticky residue, but it came off easily using a small piece of paper towel soaked in rubbing alcohol. The finish on the black laptop was not damaged in any way. It looks perfect; just as if the logo was never there.

The HP laptop can do 4K @ 60Hz with HDR enabled. I and several others were able to get it working.

So the costco hp hdmi is actually 2.0 instead of 1.4b?

you can display 4k 60hz with hdmi 1.4b but you have to give up 4:4:4 chroma and do 4:2:0 chroma. HDMI 1.4 just doesn't have the bandwidth for 4K60hz 4:4:4

I was on the fence on that laptop as well because of the inability to add a second drive. I looked at service manuals for a 2.5" drive ribbon cable slot and noticed it was missing, but on older models it was there. Had it been there, it would potentionally be a near perfect budget DIY egpu setup with that intel cpu and m.2 pcie slot.

If anyone is interested, you can still find it on ebay brand new for ~$340 which isn't much more than if you ordered it from costco with tax and were lucky to get the i5 version.

yeah, the i5-1035G4 is actually slightly faster than Ryzen 5. the iris igpu is significantly faster than uhd but still slightly slower than vega8.

i do like the dual sodimm though. make ram upgrade easier as well as dual channel.

some people claim that the i5 version actually do have hdmi 2.0. i am trying to verify that. surprisingly it's not easy to verify as most people just somehow don't use the feature? lol... but if it's hdmi 2.0, i might grab one...

It is about 0.6 lb heavier than motile...

Anyone think we'll see $299 again? How about when new laptop models are introduced later this month?

There are two costco near me. the more popular closer one sold out a long time ago for the i5. The 2nd one like 10 miles away had one and i took that last one at $320 with tax.

edit:

Here are my benchmark for Costco HP i5-1035G4 vs Walmart Motile Ryzen 5:

HP i5-1035G4: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23437973
Motile Ryzen 5: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/22621921

i5-1035G4 faster in 1-4 thread. Ryzen 5 is very marginally faster when you get above 8 threads, but not quite make up for the loss to intel in single to 4 threads.

Motile has matte screen. HP has glossy screen.
Motile has better tactile feel to the touchpad.
Motile is slightly smaller and weight slightly less..
Motile has a more metallic slightly more premium feel. HP feels plasticky.

edit: HP i5-1035G HDMI is 2.0!. So both has HDMI 2.0

Awesome! The logo was the only negative I had towards this laptop. Now it's perfect! (for a $300 laptop).

So my audio stopped working while watching a youtube video and windows automatically tried reinstalling the driver and then restarted the computer. Audio still didn't work.

So I tried installing the audio drivers that someone here linked. I uninstalled the current audio drivers and restarted, as suggested by the installation (I left the amd driver in, removed realtek and THX).

The realtek driver reinstalled itself and audio works. But, before I saw that, this [imgur.com] showed up and I'm wondering if you guys have seen it too. I was thinking that maybe the Motile people have an update, so I accepted it. It opened the command line for a moment and immediately closed it. Waited a while, no restart happened. However, my keyboard stopped working. Restarting the computer made it work again. BIOS version is still 1.03 and the same box showed up.

I'm going to accept the update again. Wish me luck.

Edit: This time the update worked! BIOS 1.06 installed. [imgur.com]

Also, audio is working fine with just the automatic reinstallation of the realtek drivers, so I'm gonna leave it for now. Unless anyone recommends those DJ Urko drivers vehemently.

Let's see if performance increases with the new BIOS or not...

Edit 2: At least on userbenchmark, it didn't get better. Maybe worse.

Before - https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23349806

After - https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23454583

Not sure if any performance improvements were expected though.
