No, as I said, this is the 6 series. The model number is denoted in the one's digit....

558= 8 series w/ 90 dimming zones and 600 nits
557= 7 series w/ 16 dimming zones and 400 nits
556= 6 series w/ 10 dimming zones and 400 nits

This was a case of the classic 'cheaper Black Friday' model.

I'm currently trying to find M507 for $300, M557 for $350 or a M558 for $400 but not having much luck. The Costco TCL 55R617 for $399 is the best bet right now.
No, that's for the 8 series.

The 7 series got 8.0

This model, which is the 6 series, hasn't even been tested, and it has less dimming zones than the 7 series so would obvious have less than an 8.0 rating.
Wrong, a 8.2 is a very high score for a TV in this price range. A Samsung Q7FN is like the same score.

In any case, this TV hasn't been tested by rtings yet.

Rtings put it at 8.2 which is meh.

Can anyone attest to the quality / smart TV functions?

How's the picture quality of that TCL? Never bought a TV by them before. Always thought they were the cheaper brands e.g. Insignia, Hisense, RCA etc.

I liked Vizio 5 years ago and still have an M50-C1 which has a great picture still on it and built well. I wanted a TV with HDR/Dolby Vision and 55" a bit larger.

I have since bought and taken back a Vizio 557-G1 from Target. I had it for4 days and over a weekend to make settings and view everything from OTA broadcast TV, Blu-ray movies, test patterns, 4K HDR, Netflix, and Prime video.
In spite of what Rtings says and (besides only 400 nits) the picture quality was grainy/blurry and had red and green over saturation even after proper set up. And the remote control was very cheap and flimsy.
Upscaling of 720p or watching 720p TV channels was awful and 480p video source display was really not pleasant to watch.

I took it back, and opted for the Hisense 55H8F and found it superb in every way. I also wanted to try the TCL 55R615/617, but could not find one in a store on display nor in stock to take home without shipping and waiting.
I don't take a chance on shipping TVs or appliances. Too many dents in boxes or damaged product and have to deal with returns.

After comparing reviews of both the TCL and Hisense H8F, there is not enough difference to make me want to try the TCL. . .. and the Hisense picture quality, deep blacks, Bright and amazing HDR, accurate colors, voice remote leave me impressed.

For the same price or even $20 more the Hisense 55H8F is the winner for me.

For low-mid end TV, panel lotto play a factor. I got a H8F and the PQ is very good for that price range but a lot of other ppl bitching about their H8F having issues.

The more dimming zone version is as good as Samsung over price Qdot TV's. Samsung and Sony are such a rip offs.

That Phase guy is a shill for Hisense. He goes in every TV thread and claims Hisense is better, like a broken record.

I've seen "some" people complain. But remember . . we often see more of complaints in a forum or board so it often appears there are "many".

A lot of people have issues with any TV they might buy.

With the H8F, I have to wonder if some did not allow the TV to complete the TWO newest updates before using the TV or making any settings.
OR, if the TV had started an update, they interrupted the update process and caused some issues.

The first thing I did was make the internet connection to our wireless router. Within about 2 minutes an update notice appeared which took about 8 minutes. The last thing the update does in power down the TV. . . . pause a few moments. . then reboots the Android.
I'm wondering how many might have interrupted that process by manually powering up the TV during that power down sequence or during one of the "black" screens that occur during the update.
And , there was a minute or 2 after the first update before the 2nd update popped up on my H8F.

Speculating. I know, but many people are so excited or impatient when first plugging in a new TV that they may not realize it's as much computer as video display and needs to do it's updates without interference.
