Conventional MIDI in/out only not USB. This will not connect to a computer directly without some sort of USB interface. If he's into digital music production, you may want to look into keyboards geared specifically toward that, i.e. Native Instruments, M-Audio, etc

The ONE minor thing to consider is that while it's light, it's fairly tall, standing about 8 inches above any stand it's put on. With high end stands like the QuikLok Z71, which sit pretty tall already, this keyboard ends up sitting much higher than a standard piano. For that reason I recommend a cheaper, shorter stand with this keyboard, or even better the HML-1.
