Getting ready for 25 comments asking if this has a second RAM slot...

I will save you all the hassle, it does NOT have a second slot for RAM. RAM is single channel/slot only.

Just got one from last fp deal. Nice little laptop. Lightweight and fairly fast for ryzen 3 and 4gb ram. No bloatware at all have 90 gb free on hard drive after windows. This is the link for memory from last fp deal.

No, and it wouldn't matter anyway. Contrary to popular [and completely wrong] belief, dual channel RAM access yields very close to zero performance improvement except in high-load server applications.
as I understood the integrated GPU from AMD actually benefits lots from dual channel at least 20-30% performance boost. I get that Vega 3 is not the best, but every bit helps.

...and we're in the 5 thread?
the point is that the vega igpu will take up a significant amount of ram for itself right off. so you need to have a little more extra ram in both the R3 and R5

And no you don't need 8gb of ram. I know because I work for THE search giant. Does that lend credibility?

I can tell you that many IT people act like know-it-alls, snobs. But when one gets way too cocky around me I will simply tell them I've design some systems in the past, down to the bits and packets. So in a sense the person is fcking using my design and bragging about it. Win for both of us I think hahaha

I am currently using a Lenovo T480 W10 Pro with 16 GB of RAM installed. Performance monitor says 57% of available memory is in use. Google Chrome (44 tabs, many code reviews) accounts for 3,287.6 MB of that. Next biggest users are various McAfee processes (required by Corporate). Microsoft Outlook is at 69.4 MB. The Google Chrome process dwarfs them all. I will delete 20 tabs...

Google Chrome process dropped to 2,680.6 MB 50% of available memory is in use. Let me delete 14 more tabs....

Chrome down to 1,917.8 MB 43% of available memory in use. So I only have 10 tabs open in Chrome, plus other McAfee processes running for Corporate security, etc. and I am using 43% of 16 GB. I would save a little under 400 MB if I was not running McAfee.

I like not having to worry about memory. I have just shown it is possible to exceed 8 GB depending on processes installed and somewhat excessive use of the browser for work tasks. I hope 8 will be sufficient for my use, but I have to admit after going through this exercise I wish I had sprung for 16.

I really needed another device so I wasn't using my work computer for my personal computer. At this price, its hard to say no.

However I do want to do some of the upgrades. Any recommendations for RAM and hard drive?

*sigh*

I really wish some of y'all would read up on application multi-process memory management.

Dealsfordad, you could do that same experiment with 8gb of ram, and it would work fine. Chrome is designed to be able to take advantage of any memory available. If you have 16gb, it's going to use it. If you have 8gb, it is going to use it. You'll still be able to have 30 tabs open with 8gb, just like you would with 16gb.

You'll be fine with 8gb of ram.

There is no difference in performance between single channel or dual channel configurations except in the rarest of cases.
This is just flat out wrong. For integrated GPUs like this Ryzen, dual channel absolutely affects graphics performance by almost 30% over single channel. Please do some research next time.

Would this be a decent replacement for the Direkt-tek 11.6" laptop deal from June 2018? I realize its not touch screen, and I upgraded the machine to a 256gb ssd.

I have the DT laptop and if you can live without the touchscreen and Windows Ink this is a huge performance upgrade.

It allows you to draw on the screen using a special stylus (which came with the DT laptop)
