3,5 and 6 drivers (speakers) in each earpiece. Imagine the R&D, scaled size down and find placement of 3-6 drivers in such a small area. Now make it sound great and be reliable, I say why so cheap.
In 2007 I thought it would be clever to upgrade from etymotic er-4p to Westone UM2 after having lost a coat with the etymotics inside.
What a disappointment! I could hear every instrument with the Etymotic er-4, the $300 westone was just blah.
At the time I asked the company if the muddled audio was a defect, and they weren't helpful.
Is Westone different these days?
Can I plug these directly into a good laptop or phone or do I need a good headphone amp?
I just got the W80 from another sales thread. So far I can say that everything sounds very good. There is very good instrument separation, imaging and wide stage. I use my IEM mostly with iPad pro and MacBook pro, no amps yet. I am considering to order an amp soon. You can always order it and return if you don't like it. Just like anything else, you really have to try it out and see if you like it to make the final call.

There are many IEMs this small nowaday, these are BA Drivers which are inherently smaller in than other drivers in general, Knowles or Sonion ones usually. Its not uncommon to find other iems this small w/ that many drivers nowadays. The real question is the price to performance ratio 2020, and if Westone can still make quality iems for the price given how good the rest of the hifi market is now. I've owned 2 sets of westones that i've been pretty disappointed by especially for how much I've paid for them. Weather or not i should give them a try again im not really sure.
Tho the W60's seem like pretty solid discount especially since they come w/ the BT cable. I have however read their BT cable is pretty poor and it would make more sense to just use it wired.
So I got the w60 form the last sale. This is my first set of high end iem. They sound really good. What I like that I can hear the full spectrum of sound. I using them with shure psm 3 300 when I stream to for game audio and mic monitoring.
Can anyone compare these to the ultimate ears triple fi 10's from a few years ago?
I bought into the triple10 hype and bought them at their peak price many years ago. You won't like to know this, but I have a 40dll pair of iem (can't remember the name and I keep them at work) that sound better. Sure, they were the tits 10 years ago or whatever, but technology advancement is amazing. I can't answer your question because I don't have the Weston, but I would advise that you listen to any iem your going to buy and judge them for yourself.
This last year many good iems have become available at more affordable price points from Chinese companies- chifi. The Blon BL-03 is $29. It needs a $15 cable and I need foam eartips to get a good seal. But it is very good sounding with strong reviews.
