I'm not sure about the r980t, but the r1280t destroys the Alesis Elevate 3. Alesis elevates are pretty muddy and sibilant. I don't think they can or should be used as studio monitors, but as a pair of $50 computer speakers, they're not that bad, but there are likely better options for the same price. If you're fine with not having a stereo speaker set, you could just get a W-King D8, or an Anker Soundcore Motion+. They'd both likely sound better than the Alesis Elevate 3. But, the r1280t would be my choice for a budget set of speakers. It sometimes drops to $70, usually on BF/CM.
Edit: The r1280db is the same price as the r1280t atm so go for that instead. The r1280db is extremely similar to the r1280t (it's a bit warmer), and has bluetooth.
FYI regular price from b&h is $59

Has anyone compared these to the Edifier speakers that pop up around this price?

Assuming your record player has a pre-amp built in, yes (rca jacks built in to your player?)
The Yes, RCA from Turntable to RCA inputs on the monitors.
The No, you may need a Phono pre-amp to go between them. They don't cost much for a basic one and might be worth the investment.
How would this work for watching movies/tv from my desktop?
Do I need an amplifier/some other device to actually connect this to my computer (I only see RCA input).

Use mini to RCA cable

These can be used on their own as they have a power supply and each have 10w amps. You can connect anything with an rca cable.
