Marriott has committed to provide $10 million worth of hotel stays for healthcare professionals leading the fight against COVID-19 in the United States.

The initiative, called Rooms for Responders, will provide free rooms in some of the areas most impacted including New York City, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C. and Newark, N.J. To implement this initiative, we collaborated with the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Emergency Nurses Association to match doctors and nurses with free accommodations at participating hotels.

In a separate effort for frontline healthcare workers, we have joined with a number of our hotel owners and franchisee partners to launch the Community Caregiver Program. This initiative, available in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America, provides significantly discounted rates for first responders and healthcare professionals who want to book rooms at hotels in close proximity to the hospitals where they're working. The rate is available on Marriott.com at nearly 2,500 hotels.
So it looks like the free rooms for first responders will go through their respective trade organizations/associations and ONLY for those cities listed above.

However, for the deeply discounted rates for others thru their Community Caregiver Program, book with promotional code on your own. Valid ID will be required at check-in.

You know what this reminds me of? When Kate Winslet's character got infected in the movie Contagion. If I were staying at a hotel, I'd first make sure all house keeping personnel were following proper safety precautions and learn if their disinfecting routines are actually sufficient enough. Even then, it may be safest to disinfect the things you touch yourself each time you come and go and always leave on the do not disturb sign. Stay safe everyone!

I wonder if they still have housekeeping cleaning the rooms... One would think so, but are the hotel employees wearing PPE?

I would hope they have proper PPE and disinfectants. This is really nice of them to do this for the health care workers and first responders though. Many of them are already staying in hotels away from home so they don't infect their loved ones, so this should help a lot of people.

Most people don't disinfect properly. Like I always see people just spray and wipe a surface with no dwell time, or just wipe down once with a Lysol/Clorox wipe. Most products require a 4-10 minute contact time to disinfect. A single pass with a wipe isn't going to keep the surface wet for 4 minutes.

I also see a lot of restaurants store rags in the disinfecting solution but the a microfiber rags commonly absorb up to 50% of the disinfecting agents (quats) and cotton rags absorb up to 80% so if the restaurant isn't testing the solution after rags have sat in it, it might not be disinfecting anymore.

Agree. Looked in Boston for my wife that's isolating due to her work in the ICU and it's not exactly the bargain of the century. Looking at $3,000/month.

The sani water usually lasts 2 hours. They have strips to test the sani water if it's still serviceable. The chances of most restaurants doing this is slim however considering the labor crunch so many restaurants are/were under.

For reference since I work at hotels. I was told housekeeping is cleaning rooms only after a guest checks out.

Also at least at my hotels they are leaving room as is until at least a week later. So in theory it greatly reduces the likelihood that the virus is present in the room.

But for the actual housekeeping person being sick they do check with them daily and given the new requirements and our policy is if a doctor says you should stay home (regardless of why) you get paid sick leave. So in one case the person had a cold but the doc (and really the hotel too) opted to let them stay home (and get paid). Logic being we can't afford to have anyone to be sick regardless what they have.

Don't count on housekeeping doing a thorough job of cleaning.

I know some people running some small hotels and motels. They can't get their hands on enough PPE like face masks or gloves because most places are sold out. It's been a challenge for them to keep their employees safe.

Good initiative given that there is no occupancy better put them in use to a good cause.

The Hertz deal sounds good but very few people have been able to sign up successfully. Both of my sisters are RN in NYC and both signed up but none have gotten anything. Hertz said they will get a call to confirm details and make reservations but nada. Seems more of a PR stunt right now with limited engagement

Maybe $10 cheaper than regular price in Florida and only properties with kitchenettes it seems.
What I need is a small suv rental in Orlando for a month or two. That would get me into a hospital.
