listed for Price: $499.99

listed for Price: $479.99
4 cameras
listed for Price: $379.99
note: These imho are not worth the full listed price. Also I expect these kits to have super cheap cables. So remember to get better cables if you want to reuse any cabling in the future for upgrading your kit.
FYI - prior deal

Sounds like you may have a decent i7 PC
If gen 4 or better ( gen 6 then perfect, if gen 3 or older get a newer one gen 6+ )
Do you have the full version of Blue Iris? If so check ipcamtalk on tuning parameters and direct to disk.
If not, then note the demo version is not very performant. ( i.e. think best to only to test a camera or 2 )
Blue Iris is good if you want to mix OEM products ( foscam, dahaua, hikvision, other.. ). Foscams hope you already have those. Otherwise I'd look at the Amcrest PT(no Z) models which you can sometimes find for $50 and can use wire ethernet or wifi
Also you can try SmartPSS on the PC ( for Dahua OEM cameras ) - Hikvision makes IVM-4200 iirc..
Yes, get a nice poe switch and you're good.
NVRs I'd only consider if you didnt have the pc
The wired mouse that comes with it is not best but again does the job. Setup was easy. Do wish the cables was longer.
See the notes from the links I've posted
Basically: Go wired IP PoE for best results, but expect some DIY learning and config. WiFi in general is not reliable enough for your core setup. Cloud dependent wifi product are not good for continuous recording and reliability ( you probably already know that )
In particular the following wiki's ( deals are old, but write up still has useful info )

and

Also ipcamtalk cliff notes
Also for more of a bullet point list - look for SouthernYankee's welcome message to new members at ipcamtalk
Not a lot of deals right now, however this one looks decent ( not perfect but you can test and return if you are a Costco member )

You can buy the cheapest new vehicle on the market, or you can decide first what you need and then look for the best vehicle which meets your needs.
Example:
Cheapest vehicle = moped
You live in a place that snows in the winter. That moped will not work well with this.
Seriously, buying a moped when you need something better is not a good use of your money.
Take the time to figure out what your needs are first, then look for kits which meet that need. Then compromise based on your budget.
Buying the cheapest typically is a waste of your money.

Hi mat I've never had security camera system i just bought a single family home and I would like to get the security system, from what I have learned from searching is that poe is the best one to have and wireless ones are not reliable because anyone can cut the internet connection from outside of house and boom you have no footage ..... so given that you have extensive knowledge what do you suggest for a 6-10 camera system if you can point to just one that you would buy for yourself so that i can be on the lookout for a deal for that specific one.... i know you get this type of request a lot... any insight is highly appreciated 😊
If you're new to security cameras, just get ONE decent IP PoE camera and a small PoE switch and start playing with it. I recommend a varifocal model to learn with.
Look for SouthernYankee's welcome message, it includes various models that ipcamtalk members have been talking about. I would get a 4MP Dahua OEM starlight+ varifocal model.
Play around with it, and then you can keep it and use it for the most important view - and get more affordable models for the rest of your kit once you understand your setup better.
If you can wait a bit, hopefully we will have an active BF-cyberweek period in 2020 and see a lot of good deals around then. Until then you can use the one camera to watch over your front entrance area.

I have a couple of simple questions as follows:
1) does this system record in H.265 format or H.264?
2) if i buy the 8-camera system, is 1TB hard disc enough for 2 weeks recording 24/7?
3) are the cameras of 1080P or 5MP? It mentions "5MP Video Security System" in the product title.
4) are the cameras are PoE cameras? I saw more than one power adaptors used in their setup video on Amazon website
5) if the cameras are of 1080P, are they good enough for recognition of people's face in drive way and front door?
Thanks again!

Originally the Ad had "5MP" listed... now I see it is "2MP" ( 1080P ).
This is NOT a POE kit. It is an analog coax bnc DVR kit. ( a proper PoE kit would have a NVR instead of a DVR )
I DO NOT recommend folks buy this, it is a very affordable kit - and clearly the vendor has changed the specs without us noticing - so I have less trust in this vendor than when I first noticed this kit.
In general do not buy based on a cheap price. If you do you will end up with a system which does not perform as well as you want or need.
As I did not think this was a great kit in the first place, I skipped looking much further into the specs - and now that the specs have changed, I have no idea if H.265 is supported. The original post iirc only had mentioned supporting H.264
Please do see the link's I've mentioned before.
