If anyone is looking for the 42mm in white, Sam's Club has it for $199 in stock for shipping. (goes in and out of stock). I'm hoping the price on the 3 will go down to $150, heh.
So need to decide on this series 3 for $179 vs series 5 for $299? Anyone have opinions on value for $120 difference vs $200 difference ~3 months ago?
Series 5 has:
- Bigger screen & always on display option
- Worse battery life (due to the larger screen, even without always-on enabled)
- The "ECG app" is a giant gimmick, you shouldn't care about this. It only does anything when the app is running and you're touching the watch face.
- Compass (niche, but useful for those who need it)
- 64 bit OS/CPU that might be maintained for longer (although in my experiences Apple Watches never last long enough for that to matter)
In my opinion: Go cheap now. Apple Watch 6 is meant to add the coveted Pulse Oximeter and everyone is hoping for battery life improvements. There's nothing inherently "bad" about the 5, just better off sitting on that $120 so you can sooner justify an upgrade to a Apple Watch 7 or whatever which will actually add value instead of the 5's mediocre improvements.
Or to phase that another way: If you'd keep a AW 3 for two years, you'd need to keep a 5 for three years to offset the added cost. The changes in just the next generation will make you regret needing to keep the 5 for that long, let alone the battery life degradation that will make the 5 annoying in the third year of its life.

Also the series 5 has double the storage. Good for offline music.
