Well, even I have limits so Hilti was out and it came down to Milwaukee and DeWalt and I thought about Makita. DeWalt had better and more choices imho and Home Depot had some really good deals when I was ready to jump so that was the direction I went. I'm not sorry. Oh, interestingly, for outdoor "tools", I ended up going with Ryobi as they got so many choices...
Honestly if money is an issue (like young new homeowner/apartment dweller) I'd go Ryobi... If you got a few more dollars to spend, I'd look at one of the "big three." I'm actually surprised that Makita doesn't push the starter kits more as they also have a huge line of products that most people don't know about and they aren't very good at communicating they have. If you are rich, well, you can spend whatever you want... And if you are a contractor, then you really pay attention to quality, reliability. I always pay attention to what "real" workers have to say about products based upon many many hours of use in the field.
And since you see many opinions from them the "big three" it is often a matter of opinion. Of course DeWalt has essentially high quality contractor level tools AND cheaper versions. You get the black and yellow, but it pays to research before paying as some are no better than Ryobi for quite a bit more. Milwaukee and Makita tend to stay more true to a contractor level set of tools...
Just an observation...
