Is this safe? Not being allowed to eat around makes me worry about how safe it is. Any input appreciated. I'd rather not use DEET. Rubbing cancer on my body doesn't sound like a smart idea.

I'll add my .02 as well. Ours work relatively well if the packets are fresh. Seems to work as well as a citronella candle. However, we got bitten when I used an old unopened packet that had been on my shelf for a year. IMHO nothing works better than DEET, but this is a convenient little gadget for the backyard dinner table.
It has been scientific proven that citronella does literally nothing for mosquitos. So what you are saying is this is trash?

Citroella candles or perhaps the smoke it creates. Placebo? Who knows. Good article though. It works for me and some others and seems to not work for others.

More likely the smoke it creates; as making a camp fire often reduces mosquitos as well. Something worth testing.

I tend to just spray the out layer of my clothing with deet and that works well, as opposed to spraying it on my skin. Wear a light jacket and pants.

Haven't been desperate enough to spray my skin but I'm sure for some folks in some areas with heavy mosquitoes, that is a must.

yes. Apparently many people have done it but it takes some modification to the cartridge. Some even install a refill port instead of removing the 1 way valve

You can also get replacement pads inexpensive as well it seems.
