Wasnt aware of this type of grill before, and was trying to find good deals on webers or kamados but this thing looks like will do the job! Thanks
I can't recommend Kamado grills enough. You can do EVERYTHING on them. Low and slow brisket...no prob. Seared steak at 600 deg...no prob. 3 minute pizza at 800 deg...no prob. Plus it's so efficient your charcoal lasts forever.
picked mine up in LaPlata, MD. It was a bit of a drive, but saved $100. Had a yellow clearance sticker on it. This is a new model for 2020, haven't seen any deals on it until now.
Did you notice if they had more than one? I'm pretty close to LaPlata.
I live in the Maryland area and 2 Walmart's I have been to have them for $355 and $335 respectively based on 1 of them being a floor model and have a bent handle.
This thing needs a cover (or mods) for the rain. I was cooking in the rain last night and the controller could not reach target temp of 500+. This wasn't even a downpour, and it was still 90 out. I think this controller is just a P (Proportional) without the ID (Integral Derivative).
I haven't had mine long enough to know about the cold. It is double walled, so it should do okay after it warms up. There is going to be some ambient temperature where the controller has large steady state error, like the rain, but that may be pretty cold.
I don't have one yet, but most reports indicate that wind is a bigger issue than rain in terms of inaccurate temperatures. Basically wind gets in the big back vent on the 560 and cools part o the cooking chamber (especially the middle/top rack), but the temp probe is closer to the grates where the wind has less effect.

I do believe it is a PID controller though.
Wind is the biggest factor in grilling/smoking as a whole. I don't own this smoker but I'd never hold what a grill or smoker does in the wind against it. Some are betters than others, which can be said about anything in life.
Been eyeing this for a while. A guy in my office just bought one and gave me a review:
- The box is HUGE. You'll need a pickup truck/large SUV to get it home.
- It's not quite like a pellet grill for charcoal- you have to manually light the charcoal and the hopper feeds the charcoal in as it turns to ash.
- The build quality is so-so. Lots of stamped steel and misaligned holes.
- The documentation warns the charcoal hopper WILL RUST. This is not uncommon due to the high heat. Shouldn't be a deal breaker- just spray it with grill paint 1-2 times a year.
- The temperature regulation isn't bad- it will stay within 50 degrees of what is set.
- At $500 it's a bit overpriced. They have an upgraded $700 model that is vastly improved. At under $400 its well worth it though.
Box is large, but it fit in my Chevy Volt. I'm not sure you need a truck/large SUV.
The only issue for me is the longevity of a Masterbuilt product. Thin gauge metal, cheap paint, rusting. As for the controllers, those can be remedied via firmware updates.
Weber should've made something like this instead of their Smokefire pellet smoker which catches on fire and has problems of its own.
Can I use wood chip on this instead of charcoal? Will it catch on fire?
masterbuilt recommends you only use a certain amount of wood CHUNKS, not chips, in the hopper with charcoal. But people have reported they use wood chunks only (no charcoal), but there is more creosote build up.
Walmarts in my area and even extended areas from me all are 10% off ~447 bucks. Not a bad deal but anyone know if other walmarts will begin to put these on clearance as the summer progresses? Someone posted all walmarts are independent marketplaces but curious when/how store managers decide to move an item to clear it out. How likely would they be willing to negotiate if I approached a store manager?

Yes, they do, even though I bought a damaged unit on clearance
