Used to go on sale 1 or 2 times a year for 179. Not sure if it still does.

Can you still do great crown molding cuts with single bevel?

So I think most DIY "small projects" people will be ok with a single bevel miter saw. At least this is a 12" saw. But, if you are doing a lot of cuts, particularly on the same board, like with crown molding, a double bevel is such a quality of life improvement. Technically you can do crown molding with a single bevel, but you are going to constantly be pulling the board out, flipping it around, etc.. This is sort of tedious when you are buying molding boards that are often 10-12' in length. Double bevel going to make it such a breeze.

But, you get what you pay for. I've seen this saw regularly on sales for $179 at least a couple times a year. It's not bad for $200. It's actually a great saw. Just know why you are getting it and what you want it for and if you have large DIY projects in the future that are going to require lots of cuts on long boards, I'd recommend to consider spending a little more on a double bevel miter. I should also mention that there is the risk where you think you won't need it, find you enjoy woodworking, once you get a little comfortable with it, and then realize how much money you can save with relatively simple carpentry skills in your home, and then wish you had it as you get more into it.

It's a quality miter saw though here.

Yup. I'll add that most people never need a double-bevel. Even on the rare case when you need a double bevel, you flip the piece over to make that specialized cut. That's it. So unless you're a pro doing crown moulding work, a single bevel is more than fine.

Thanks for the info. I'm wanting to build some bookshelves and maybe a coffee table. Do you think, for a person like me who has never done such work, this would be good for that type of project?

A miter saw, even a high-end sliding miter saw, won't let you rip boards to the proper depth. A tablesaw can handle the ripping, but is not best at cutting them to the desired length unless it's large enough.

Probably a high end circular saw and guide would do everything you need. There's videos on YouTube you can watch. You'll want a saw with a magnesium shoe, and some type of a foam board to put underneath the wood as you cut it. You'll have to choose a work surface. Either a table, some stiff plywood going across sawhorses, or doing everything on the ground. You can go to a quality lumberyard and have them cut strips of wood that to use for a guide to clamp down for making your cuts.

Semi off topic question. I am new to woodworking/DIY and it is my understanding that many miter saws like this one have holes in the fence that you can screw a piece of wood to. This is to supplement or lengthen the metal fence that is part of the saw (such as in the youtube link below).

However, I see a lot of miter saws that are lacking the holes (see the right side fence of the Dewalt DSW713 linked below). Am I missing something, or is it not possible to attach a sacrificial fence to a miter saw without fence holes?

If you can get one. I tried to order one on FD, after 2 weeks was sent an email that they had no idea when it would be in stock.
