The $40 Costco Gift Card will be Mailed to you within 4-6 weeks.
You can enroll in auto-renewal at the same time you complete your online redemption if your state requires you pay sales tax. Tax will be listed under Order Summary on the membership checkout page.
If Tax is listed as $0.00 in your Order Summary, you will need to enroll in auto-renewal after redeeming your membership. You may do so under the Membership Details section on your Costco confirmation page or from your Costco Account Details page.

edit: Groupon has confirmed in this thread that both the $40 off $250 online code and the $40 Shop Card expire at the end of January.
Also, the Groupon offer itself is available until August 31st.
Remember to sign up at BEGINNING of the month as membership always expires at end of month, 13 for 12.

My current membership expires in Nov.
My wife had a costco membership that expired on June 30, 2019. I was listed as the second household member. I used my existing costco.com account that is in my name but tied to my wife's membership to renew the membership using the groupon-provided Shop card # and PIN. I then tried to set up Auto renew and followed some suggestions here to remove a Mastercard that was listed as my payment method then add a Visa card. When I clicked on the button to Set up Membership Auto Renew under Payment Methods it brought me to the Renew Membership page that just says, "Your Gold Star Membership #XXXXX can be renewed beginning on 5/31/2021."
I then noticed this statement in the Member Privileges & Conditions [costco.com] which says, "The Primary Member must authorize renewal or cardholder changes, including additions or deletions, and is responsible for the membership." My wife logged in to her costco.com account as the primary member and she was able to set up auto-renew with a Visa card. Hopefully I still receive the promotional benefits in 4-6 weeks.
