Guy seems to oscillate between nostalgia (natsukashii) and supernatural. Went to jpn back in 2007 and read all his stuff. I usually recommend Kafka as an intro to Murakami as it contains healthy doses of each.

If you like the weird / supernatural component, I'd go with Hard Boiled or Wind Up Bird next.

If you like the sentimental / nostalgic, then Norwegian Wood or South of the Border next.

Uh. Murakami is pretty well known in the states, too. Even I, who rarely read translated works, have read Murakami. He's not popular like Patton and such, but he's not exactly someone who needs the "this guy is super popular in another country" introduction.

How is this compared to IQ84? I read that maybe 5ish years ago and there were parts I really liked but others that I either couldn't get into or maybe there was commentary that went over my head haha. Maybe I should read it again.

And yet they still managed to contribute so much more to the conversation than your pointless comment...

My point was they didn't contribute anything of substance. Hence their comment has -9 TD's and counting . . .

Your comment is appreciated. Don't forget he has some short stories too if someone needs a shorter introduction, but I would agree that Kafka on the Shore is a good place to begin reading Murakami.
