Amazon gave me refunds for the cards even tho one was over a year old and I threw them in the trash.
Next memory cards I buy will be directly from Best Buy via price matching to Amazon.
That seems to be the best/safest solution.
First, if you are already a gopro subscriber, they give you an additional discount on the camera. I am not, so I couldn't see what the discount actually was.
When you check out, they break out the subscription cost (49.99) separately from the bundle cost and ask you to acknowledge it. At first, I was confused and thought they were adding this to the total cost, but when I checked out, it wasn't added. I did have to pay tax, and 2-day shipping was free.

"In the event that you cancel your subscription before the end of the initial year term but keep your camera, and in so doing, fall below the threshold for eligibility for this offer, we will reduce any applicable refund owed to you by the full retail price of the camera and reserve the right to charge your payment method for any remaining balance owed to GoPro. There is no free trial period and there will be no pro-rated refunds for cancelled subscriptions"
What does it mean when it comes time to renew? You can't cancel subscription before it ends and your subscription will likely auto-renew...so how do you cancel the 2nd year subscription?
EDIT: I guess the answer is yes, based on a search in the forum. https://community.gopro.com/t5/fo...=sales+tax [gopro.com]
Good deal but the sales tax issue is a major turn-off and deal breaker. It just seems greedy to me, since they technically can send just the sales tax on the discounted price to local government and keep the difference.
That being said I recently hopped on that osmo action deal for $200 and for my needs the GoPro 8 won't be necessary especially with accessories getting cheaper for the older osmo action that still produces quality content

Even the Hero8 promo video was better than the Hero9.

buy an iphone 11 now and a month later they come out with new line.
Same with Nvidia RTX cards, think about the people who bought 2080ti.
it's called progression.
Anyone who pays MSRP for a GoPro is impatient, naive, or stupid.
Plenty of people will buy 2020 models even in 2021, simply because of the several thousand dollar discount when dealers try to get rid of old inventory.

Every time I purchase it just takes me back to home page. Been charged on my card three times but no email confirmations! Maybe a glitch? Anybody else having issues?

Also, can I connect the camera to an external battery (via USB) and record, or will it not record while "charging"?
Yes, I just tested it, without a battery at all, plugged in via USB to an external battery. It recorded a short video just fine, with a "NO BATT" warning on the screen. In fact, I saw a tutorial video recently for shooting an overnight time lapse, and step 1 was plugging it into an external power source (in that case, even via extension cord into the house). Nice to know the battery isn't actually needed (for long, static shots where you can plug in).
The HERO8 battery is 1,220 mAh. The HERO9 battery is 1,720mAh. A recent deal on a USB battery pack was 20,000 mAh, or enough to charge the new battery over 10x.
I like the GoPro dual charger [gopro.com] so at the end of the day you can charge two batteries separate from your camera.. and it's easy to plug it into a battery pack in your backpack and charge a dead one while you're shooting with the other. I don't know how long it takes to recharge, so conceivably you could still run out of batteries if you had two and were doing nonstop shooting. But extra batteries are only $14 with your GoPro subscription.
For me, the biggest problem is if you're out surfing/diving or something for over an hour. You can't change batteries or do an external power pack there on/in the water.
What would be REALLY cool is if it had wireless charging, and there was a waterproof battery pack that supported that.
In fact, I'm surprised this Camera Media Mod [gopro.com] doesn't include a USB passthrough for charging.
