I had two hero 7 blacks go "bad" on me and was engaged in a 1.5 year fight with them over replacements on and off, only to find out that two out of three Samsung memory cards I bought off of Amazon as FP slick deals were fakes, and actually what caused my cameras to freeze, crash, fail to give me clear files at random. I felt like an idiot. I was so sure it was GoPro's fault.

Amazon gave me refunds for the cards even tho one was over a year old and I threw them in the trash.

Next memory cards I buy will be directly from Best Buy via price matching to Amazon.

That seems to be the best/safest solution.

Just adding two comments.

First, if you are already a gopro subscriber, they give you an additional discount on the camera. I am not, so I couldn't see what the discount actually was.

When you check out, they break out the subscription cost (49.99) separately from the bundle cost and ask you to acknowledge it. At first, I was confused and thought they were adding this to the total cost, but when I checked out, it wasn't added. I did have to pay tax, and 2-day shipping was free.

Glad they brought back the replaceable lens cover. That's the only thing i don't like about the Hero 8.

The terms and conditions for this deal are interesting:
"In the event that you cancel your subscription before the end of the initial year term but keep your camera, and in so doing, fall below the threshold for eligibility for this offer, we will reduce any applicable refund owed to you by the full retail price of the camera and reserve the right to charge your payment method for any remaining balance owed to GoPro. There is no free trial period and there will be no pro-rated refunds for cancelled subscriptions"

What does it mean when it comes time to renew? You can't cancel subscription before it ends and your subscription will likely auto-renew...so how do you cancel the 2nd year subscription?
You just turn off auto renew the last month

Does GoPro always charge a ridiculous amount of sales tax? It seems like they are charging the sales tax on the pre-discount price, which is 449.99 (camera) + 49.99 (subscription).

EDIT: I guess the answer is yes, based on a search in the forum. https://community.gopro.com/t5/fo...=sales+tax [gopro.com]

Good deal but the sales tax issue is a major turn-off and deal breaker. It just seems greedy to me, since they technically can send just the sales tax on the discounted price to local government and keep the difference.

GoPro has the best video production team when it comes to marketing their new products even when they're not groundbreaking. They're right up there with Apple.

That being said I recently hopped on that osmo action deal for $200 and for my needs the GoPro 8 won't be necessary especially with accessories getting cheaper for the older osmo action that still produces quality content
Insta360 has the best promo video for a new action cam launched in the last two years.

Even the Hero8 promo video was better than the Hero9.

I'm kicking myself for having bought the GoPro 8 for $289 from Costco a few days ago.

I just paid $181 for a new DJI action is the GoPro 9 that much better?
Only if you need GPS.

Quote from Whitedlite :
why, companies release new products yearly.

buy an iphone 11 now and a month later they come out with new line.
Same with Nvidia RTX cards, think about the people who bought 2080ti.

it's called progression.
The problem is GoPro (like Apple) doesn't drop their prices progressively over the 1-year cycle. Other electronics (laptops, Nvidia graphics cards) do. Guarantee people would be less upset the Hero8 price dropped to $225-250 in the last 3 mo of the cycle.

Quote from cfishy :
I'm guessing because of the lock down, their sales are suffering, hence the discount straight out the gate.
While GoPro pretends its MSRP is $400/450, their internal planning targets a $300/350 price. This is why the trade-in discount has been continuously available for 3+ years. Otherwise they can't compete with DJI or Insta360.

Anyone who pays MSRP for a GoPro is impatient, naive, or stupid.

Would you feel screwed by Ford for coming out with an upgraded 2021 mustang if you bought your 2020 2 months ago...new models and progress are kind of a requirement for staying in business..
No, because every dealership/manufacturer runs sweet sweet end of model year deals.

Plenty of people will buy 2020 models even in 2021, simply because of the several thousand dollar discount when dealers try to get rid of old inventory.

why can't gopro make a mobius or runcam style action/dash hybrid with optional capacitor included. good quality, not like pos mobius. i'd buy 2.
GoPro wants to be a social media company. They care about vloggers, but not motorsports (OBDII), powersports (telemetry support), or drones (Session).

I have a 5 that I barely used because frankly my mtn bike runs are just boring after the first few times lol. I don't have the patience to edit and post process either. The hypersmooth does look pretty neat but again those promo videos are totally edited.
I did a mountain bike run with a GoPro 8 mounted to my chest. It came out phenomenal.

As a professional photographer, I can't agree more. Don't skimp on a memory card. I will only buy SanDisk in person from BeatBuy too. Got burned by a deal online and the card corrupted after the shoot.

Not true. I was only charged tax on $300. They did not charge me tax on subscription or pre-discounted price

I've tried purchasing several times now. I purposefully don't log into my GoPro PLUS account because then I don't get the year of PLUS for free. but I use the same email for the PLUS subscription.

Every time I purchase it just takes me back to home page. Been charged on my card three times but no email confirmations! Maybe a glitch? Anybody else having issues?

Can you tell me how long of continuous recording you got with the 8 and how much storage it required?

Also, can I connect the camera to an external battery (via USB) and record, or will it not record while "charging"?
I didn't do any continuous recording tests, but I was disappointed in the battery life of the HERO8. I hear it's only good for about an hour [digitalcameraworld.com] of 4K video.

Quote :
As for battery life, it lasts for roughly 50 minutes on a single charge, so just like the GoPro Max, the Hero8 Black is good for a day out sporadically shooting two-minute clips here and there. If, however, you're looking to continuously shoot for hours on end, then you'll want to pack a spare or a power bank. The Hero8 Black's door detaches, making it convenient to keep it plugged into a power bank for long shoots, provided you don't need weather-sealing.

Yes, I just tested it, without a battery at all, plugged in via USB to an external battery. It recorded a short video just fine, with a "NO BATT" warning on the screen. In fact, I saw a tutorial video recently for shooting an overnight time lapse, and step 1 was plugging it into an external power source (in that case, even via extension cord into the house). Nice to know the battery isn't actually needed (for long, static shots where you can plug in).

The HERO8 battery is 1,220 mAh. The HERO9 battery is 1,720mAh. A recent deal on a USB battery pack was 20,000 mAh, or enough to charge the new battery over 10x.

I like the GoPro dual charger [gopro.com] so at the end of the day you can charge two batteries separate from your camera.. and it's easy to plug it into a battery pack in your backpack and charge a dead one while you're shooting with the other. I don't know how long it takes to recharge, so conceivably you could still run out of batteries if you had two and were doing nonstop shooting. But extra batteries are only $14 with your GoPro subscription.

For me, the biggest problem is if you're out surfing/diving or something for over an hour. You can't change batteries or do an external power pack there on/in the water.

What would be REALLY cool is if it had wireless charging, and there was a waterproof battery pack that supported that.

In fact, I'm surprised this Camera Media Mod [gopro.com] doesn't include a USB passthrough for charging.
