TP-Link Archer AX50
The best Wi-Fi router
In our tests the TP-Link Archer AX50 created a speedy, responsive network even from across a medium house. You have to spend a lot more on a router—or a mesh kit if you have a very large home—to get anything even a little better. It's our first WI-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router pick.

The TP-Link Archer AX50 is reasonably priced, yet it can handle a growing selection of laptops and smart devices while surpassing the performance of routers that cost twice as much. It's generally speedy and able to reach long range, it has little lag even when the network is busy, and it's a great choice if you have a high-performance internet service plan. It's compatible with Wi-Fi 6, the latest wireless standard, and it comes with built-in security in the form of a lifetime subscription to updates.

TP-Link Archer AX20
If our main pick is unavailable
The Archer AX20 offers fewer features than our pick for a slightly lower price, but in most cases it can keep up in throughput, responsiveness, and ease of setup.

If our pick is out of stock or its price is more than $30 higher, you should consider the TP-Link Archer AX20 instead. The AX20 looks like the AX50 and offers a strong, responsive network that's nearly as good, especially if your house isn't larger than our 2,300-square-foot-test home. But it's not quite as fast at longer ranges, and TP-Link sacrifices a few advanced features and settings in its administration interface to meet the lower price

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:

1. Donknows has a review on the AX3000 (Archer AX 50) this has thoroughly been discredited on this thread.

Quote from PeteyTheStriker :
As was mentioned by me and a few others, that DONGKNOWS review is poorly done. It is not an apples to apples comparison, he used a router with a brand new firmware comparing to an identical router with firmware over 6 months old which had major problems just like any other router around that time. It takes time to work out the bugs and TP-Link, Netgear, Asus to name a few all put out routers with bugged performance with their first set of Wifi 6 routers. So yeah..... Important to make apples to apples instead of reading something without understanding the testing. If he did it the correct way he would have had both side by side on the same firmware. The routers are identical outside USB 3.0 port and Homecare included on one, so you will get identical performance results with the same firmware.

2. CAT7, a CAT 6 or CAT5e cable is needed for gigabit Ethernet. Most cables made for the last 10 years are already 5e, so just saying that cables are usually never a bottleneck.

Other options

TP Link AX3000 @ walmart Nov 14th I think $100
Netgear AX5200 @ Besbuy for $150

I have lost confidence in Asus lately. Just returned AX92 after the WIFI 6 did not even work on both the routers.
Who said the AX3000 would be at $100? Can you indicate your source?

AC wave 1 is definitely outdated, but Wave 2 and AX stuff is pretty competitive. Just depends on radio MIMO from my point of view, but I'm biased in that regard.
What is wave 1 and Wave 2? Are they variants of the AC class routers?

Just set the Nighthawk AX5200 up. Used Mobile app with no issues. Running default settings currently. Gained about 25 feet in range through walls. Now have no dead spots. Notice no major difference in range in 5g.

Speed is the most notable factor. Speed test results went from 76 Mbps to 103 Mbps with the only difference being the AX router.

I am updating from a 6 or 7 year old ASUS N66U N900 router so your results might not be as significant.
Strange that you are only getting 76 to 103 Mbps with the Netgear Nighthawk AX5200 $150 router. What is the speed that you have contracted for with your cable provider?

I used the TP-LINK AX1800 (which is a step down from the TP-LINK AX3000, #1 rated router by NY times) and I am getting the full 230 mbps that I have contracted for with Spectrum. (Actually, I contracted for 200 mbps, but the cable company actually supplies 230 mbps and my router captures literally the full 230 mbps.

Maybe there is a reason that NY Times rated the TP-LINK AX3000 as #1?

I'd recommend staying away from Netgear products, take it from someone who worked there. Asus and TP-Link are the industry leaders in Wi-Fi, read the reviews.
Good to know.

Asus is considered the cream of the crop in terms of a router.

To ascertain if you need to upgrade:

a) What is the speed when your router is connected to a PC a) with a cable and b) over wifi. You can check the speed in 15 seconds by going to fast.com on your web browser.

g) Check the speed over wifi by going to fast.com (either on your laptop or phone) at different points of your house.

Report back with the results. Thanks.

Thanks buddy.
Here is what I got:
Cable: 350 to 450 mps.

2.4 GHz: 5 mps at far end of house, 60 mps near the router.

5 GHz: 30 mps at far end(but not stable, sometimes drop), 200 mps near router.

We had the NETGEAR Nighthawk AX4 4-Stream AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Router (RAX35-100NAS) router and the EXACT same problem. Took it back within a year as it became super frustrating.

I decided I didn't want another Netgear as their warranty is only 90 days and we would've been out of the money if it wasn't for Sam's Club.

I got a TP-Link Archer AX20 and it's been much better even though it's lower spec'd than the r7850 Nighthawk.
I too have the Archer AX20 (i.e., the AX 1800) and so far have had stable and good performance.

Ok, so the facts are that you have contracted with Spectrum for 400 mbps and are getting 350 - 450 mbps with a wired connection to your PC but far lower speeds on the wifi. I think your router is in need of an upgrade. Why don't you wait for Black Friday deals? Either go for TP-Link or Asus and get an "AX" class router.

How many devices are connected to wifi in your house?

Usually we have less than 15 devices connected.
So for my case would you recommend the TP-link ax3000 in this thread, or the ASUS RT-AX55 AX1800 from newegg ? I have ordered the asus but that one doesn't have a lot reviews, not sure if I should switch to the tp-link ax3000 in this thread.
Thanks!

TP-Link has more technology in it, primarily the 160Mhz band, which is great but not totally useful currently. The Asus has better firmware and the ability to use AiMesh with another Asus router in the future for expanding the system.

Either will serve you fine.

How does ASUS RT-AX55 AX1800 compare with the TP-link ax 3000? If I don't use the mesh and I'm more concerned with the range and stability ?
Can any router guru please comment ? I can't find much useful reviews for ASUS RT-AX55 AX1800
Thanks a lot?
I am looping in goatee87 who is also knowledgeable on routers and maybe he can opine as well. Separately, isn't the ASUS RT-AX55 AX1800 comparable to the TP-LINK AX1800 (it terms of general capability and isn't TP-LINK AX3000 higher and therefore a better deal? Let the gurus opine!

I just thumbed down this thread even though I got in on it (probably going to return it for an Asus if a BF deal appears.
So many page views, so few thumbs up.
