or ATT you can pay online. If that doesn't work you can chat with a customer rep. After paying off you can try to request a device unlock from https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and click on not an ATT customer, and request unlock via IMEI. It might give you an error that "device is not paid off" if that is the case try it again the next day.
For Verizon, you have to go to Verizon's "corporate" store and pay with cash. And apparently the phone will unlock automatically after 60 days.
In both cases cancel your lines if you are not planning to use them. If you cancel within 3 days of activation they will not charge. For ATT you have to call and cancel. For Verizon you can cancel on chat
Did at&t charged you any activation fees like verizon does($40) for upgrade/new line from walmart?
Yes. But if you cancelled the line within 3 days they should refund it. That's true for both ATT and Verizon.
They din charge you i guess

So for Att I contacted them again ~1 day after cancelling because I had like a
100$ charge(activation fee + monthly bill). Told them that I cancelled before 3 days. They gave a 90$ credit on the bill and I only had to pay 10$(prorated bill for 3 days). But I guess the bill would have updated automatically.
For Verizon I could see a bill of 100$ as well. They gave me a credit of 40$(activation fee) and said the bill will adjust automatically and it did. And again I paid like 10$.
In any case if you cancelled before 3 days and they still gave you a bill with activation fee you can contact them and they will refund it.

I did this with Sprint. Got charged around 150 dollars. Waiting to hear back to get credit. Seems like it's borderline impossible since I cancelled and they don't want to provide credit almost

My unlock requests are getting rejected with message "We can't unlock this device because it's currently active on another AT&T customer's account."
