SHR always uses one drive with the largest capacity for parity, so putting one 14TB in won't get you anything more than what the Synology has now. You will want to buy at least two 14TB drives. Replace one drive, wait for SHR to rebuild, then repeat with the other new drive. You will end up with 2TB more than current. If you were to replace all four 12TB drives, you would end up with 6TB more than current.
The golden question, what's inside?

Extended returns in effect if you're on the fence.

Purchases made October 13, 2020 through January 2, 2021 have an extended return period through January 16, 2021
These won't get lower. BB does this every year, they offer the BF pricing a few weeks ahead of BF and then again at BF. I buy their BF special drives every year and upgrade both my servers and sell off the drives from the year before. It's the exact same scenario every time. This year it's the 14TB. Last year was the 12TB, 10 before that and 8 before that.

do these require the removal of the 3.3 v pin to work in a desktop?
Depends on your power supply. Mine were working fine in my PC with a 7 year old power supply. It starting giving me issues so bought the really expensive Seasonic 750watt platinum power supply and the drives wouldn't work. Had to do the 3.3v mod. My son needed a new power supply so figured I would just pass mine down to him and I bought another expensive power supply but went with a different brand. Same issue. This was 2 months ago, so when you hear people say it is an issue for those with older power supplys, that was not my experience. Not sure about those putting them in a NAS. From what I've read it seems most don't have an issue.

Actually, great question, can these enclosures be used with any SATA drive? Or is it specific to WD?
I would guess any. They appear to just be a usb 3 interface for sata. I guess they could have some kind of firmware on them that will only take WD drives. The enclosures don't dissipate heat well so I personally wouldn't want to use one with a drive that is used a lot.

For anyone who bought for $229.99 at the beginning of the month, I just had Best Buy do a price adjustment.

A couple caveats, I am a My Best Buy Elite tier which extends the return past the standard 14 days. I also had to get an exception for them to price-match both of the units I purchased as apparently their policy has changed to only do 1 match per sku.

But hey, $80 extra in my pocket and I've already finished transferring all my content.

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply! Definitely gives me a good launching off point! I also realize I have much to learn as I'm going to have to somehow find time to do some extensive research into this. I think 24 bays is a bit overkill for me where I'm currently at, but perhaps a 12-bay system would do the trick and give me some future expansion. I think if I tried to pop that 24 bay into our home office my wife as Martha Stewart incarnate may kill me, lol.
If you ever need any help with networking or stuff like this feel free to PM me. I will gladly help best I can. Nice of him to take the time to write all that for you. Not anyone does that nowadays

I have a MyCloud that's running low on storage space. Is this the most efficient way to increase my NAS capacity?

What if the drive crashes?
They can crash multiple times in multiple locations and no data will be lost, at least how I have these going. I run RAID1 that then gets backed up locally, sometimes then backed up again. That data is then backed up remotely to a different location. I then selectively backup to the cloud.

You can never have enough hard drives and TB's available.

For anyone wondering what speed these drives get shucked, I'm preclearing two now and each is running at about 125 MB/s.

Buy these and return under the old receipt.

I already shucked them and got rid of the plastic cases. I have them in my Synology. Too late.

Could you confirm the internal model number of the drive?

Best deal we have seen for the 14tb drives. If I needed them, I would be all over this. As it stands right now, I can wait out a possibly better deal on a bigger drive that we may see for black Friday. If you need storage space now, though, jump on this deal.
