I just purchased this water heater, normally $1299, for $799 + tax + $75 shipping.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem.../312742081

Steps to get deal:
1) Go to above link
2) Change store to zip code 15010(Edit: use Zip 97322 for $699 instead of $799)
3) Select Ship to Home (unless you happen to live close to this store), add to cart.
4) Check out.

Additional notes:
1) Federal tax credit of $300. State tax credits vary, in my home state we get an additional $400 (bringing this heater down to $99 + $75 shipping + tax).
2) For many/most, the $75 shipping is worth it even if you can get this price locally as these heaters are quite heavy and supposedly must be transported vertically.
3) Do your homework on these hybrid heaters before purchasing. You need 220V to operate. Installation expense is generally much higher with hybrid electric vs standard electric resistance heaters and gas heaters. Hot water recovery is very slow (but you can switch to standard electric mode for rapid recovery when you know your usage will be high, e.g. having company over). They can apparently be loud, so if this will be located close to a bedroom, important to think about. There are important climate and installation location factors to consider--just google.
4) The newest generation of this series from Rheem, called "Proterra" can be had for $1269, a slight discount compared to full price (15% for my location). After carefully examining specs, photos, etc - it seems that the only difference with the Proterra series is built-in leak detection with auto-shutoff. FYI if that feature is important to you, you can add it for $219:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem...513?NCNI-5
5) This is for 50 gallon. Looks like if you need 65 gal or 80 gal, the Proterra is actually on sale (whereas the Performance Platinum is full price), making the Proterra cheaper.

Wow, I just realized from this post that they now make a 40 gallon hybrid. I wish it was available last year when I replaced an indoor closet water heater. I have two water heaters, one in a closet and one in a garage. My garage water heater is a hybrid and I can see the savings on my electric bill. 10/10 recommend hybrids if you don't have gas available. I save roughly $20 per month.
The 40 gallon is listed $50 cheaper at $649. Be aware it's not much smaller though - 2 inches less diameter and 1" TALLER (63" vs 62" for the 50gal). And you'll need 6-8" air gap on top to clean the filter and get fresh air.

Note, this trick also works on the 80 gallon version - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem.../312741506

Shows up as 1499 (versus 1999)

I assume replacing a Gas heater with this would cost a lot of money (depending on other factors) since this unit is electric?
It could. I purchased an electric one from a SD post several months ago (~$270) and was just moving to a new house that is gas. Had a contractor come out and quoted a huge sum to run proper electric for it (I also would've potentially needed modifications to my circuit breaker to support more load). Was advised against it, so sold it for a nice profit to someone else. Don't need a new one urgently, but on the lookout for a deal on a gas water heater.

I don't need one of these, but that was one excellent write up of the deal and the product.

Nice catch, but you could get 2x the 50 gallon for $100 cheaper...

It's also 13" taller (75") than the 50 gallon, so make sure you have space.

I live in Washington, and got the $699 too. Plus I did a $5 off $50 purchase promo code that also worked, Order Total was $757.85. There is another $500 PUD Tax Credit if you buy a heat pump water heater, replacing a previous electric heater, but I'm switching from propane water heater to this heat pump water heater. I will still apply for that PUD tax credit and see what happens...
The PUD $500 is an instant rebate, hence the price reflects the $500 off because of the rebate. So theres definitely a YMMV for double dipping on that rebate.

Thank you very much OP and a few others, who caught this at $699. I've been waiting for this water heater for a long time to go on sale.

Thx OP. Gonna give this a shot, mine is 15yo and while I think I could get more time out of it, its probably safer to just get it replaced, especially with $800 in rebates + this discount, which makes it extremely affordable for me.

I like the autoleak detection via wifi, so going to buy that component too along with a drip pan.

Now the fun part - locating a plumber that is willing to get the permits and install it for me. Hopefully they are willing to reuse the expansion tank I have, or I'll be stuck paying them to install one of those too I guess. I somehow have a feeling most plumbers won't want to touch it unless I bought it through them, but we'll see how it goes.

Just want to comment after doing research on these, due to the slower recovery time on heat pump only mode, going with a larger 80 gallon unit could save money in the long run. If you use a lot of hot water, long showers or back to back showers, deep tub, teenagers etc a 50 gallon might not be enough even if you currently have a 50. If you spend a lot of time using the heat elements the electricity saved won't be near as much. Just a consideration if you're getting it to lower your energy usage. I ordered the 80 gallon last week with the leak detection because it was on sale and cheaper than the one without leak detection. Although at this point wish I had gone with the regular 80 in this deal because leak detection isn't a big deal to me and could have saved a few hundred $$.

I have a 65 gallon version of these installed last year. $27 dollars a year in energy consumption according to Sense Energy Monitor. My house has 2 hot water heaters so I bought this one to replace my other hot water heater. Great find!

Home Depot offers install services, I suggest starting with them. I'm wondering how much installation and permits would cost, as in order to get my local $300 rebate I have to provide a receipt from a contractor and AHRI certification/inspection, whatever that means. Anyone have a ballpark of contractor install costs for one of these?

Might have to try there worst case. Also will have to pay someone to haul away the old one. Regardless with the discount and rebates I should still be ahead now vs a random time in the future when my current one decides to rust through
