I just purchased this water heater, normally $1299, for $799 + tax + $75 shipping.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem.../312742081

Steps to get deal:
1) Go to above link
2) Change store to zip code 15010(Edit: use Zip 97322 for $699 instead of $799)
3) Select Ship to Home (unless you happen to live close to this store), add to cart.
4) Check out.

Additional notes:
1) Federal tax credit of $300. State tax credits vary, in my home state we get an additional $400 (bringing this heater down to $99 + $75 shipping + tax).
2) For many/most, the $75 shipping is worth it even if you can get this price locally as these heaters are quite heavy and supposedly must be transported vertically.
3) Do your homework on these hybrid heaters before purchasing. You need 220V to operate. Installation expense is generally much higher with hybrid electric vs standard electric resistance heaters and gas heaters. Hot water recovery is very slow (but you can switch to standard electric mode for rapid recovery when you know your usage will be high, e.g. having company over). They can apparently be loud, so if this will be located close to a bedroom, important to think about. There are important climate and installation location factors to consider--just google.
4) The newest generation of this series from Rheem, called "Proterra" can be had for $1269, a slight discount compared to full price (15% for my location). After carefully examining specs, photos, etc - it seems that the only difference with the Proterra series is built-in leak detection with auto-shutoff. FYI if that feature is important to you, you can add it for $219:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem...513?NCNI-5
5) This is for 50 gallon. Looks like if you need 65 gal or 80 gal, the Proterra is actually on sale (whereas the Performance Platinum is full price), making the Proterra cheaper.

Just installed, says it is more efficient in energy saver mode then heat pump mode?

How long does it take to heat up in heat pump mode?

I thought heat pump mode would be the best since it wouldnt use the electric heaters...
Heat pump mode is the most efficient, not the fastest. Energy Saver mode is a comprimise. It depends on the incoming water temp, set point and ambient room temp how fast it will heat the tank. in Heat Pump mode.

are folks receiving this item in 2 boxes ? what does each of the box contain ?
One large single box that should be kept upright.

I believe this setup (SP21111) detects a leak and closes the valve, done. I believe Rheem calls this "LeakGuard". If your Rheem water heater has "LeakSense" built in it can close the valve and notify you via EcoNet that there's been a leak detected.
So I called the Rheem Hybrid / Heat Pump WH support number (800-995-0982) many times until I was finally able to get into the call queue. It previously kept disconnecting me as soon as I selected an IVR option. I patiently waited 25 minutes and finally got someone. They stated that with the SP21111 kit it is plug and play and will report to the inbuilt EcoNet module in order to alert remotely.

In short, the SP21111 kit should provide both LeakGuard™ (auto-shutoff) and LeakSense™ (alerting via EcoNet).

hmmm. I guess it comes with a longer cable than pictured and you fish it behind the water heater housing somehow to plug it into the controller? If that's not the case how does the valve talk to the controller?

Must be a misprint in the manual.

It took like 2 hours to heat up to 135 in heat pump mode. Bath was piping hot. App works ok, 2 kw burned so far. The heater is a bit noisy when running. Should be a bit of a savings energy wise, old water heater said $575 per year on the yellow tag, compared to this one, like $107. Shark bite fittings made install easy although they should just put the water inlet and outlet at the top for you like a normal water heater... Lowes had some clearance 1 inch copper pipe so I used that for the extra piping, looks a bit fancy. Might shine the copper up with some sandpaper.

My guess is that the side position for inlet/outlet connections is to prevent fitting leaks from damaging the electrical components on top of the tank.

Happy Thanksgiving all. I had no plans to buy anything when I woke up this morning but SD has worked its magic on the wallet.

I ordered the 40 gal (with first hour 60 gpm rating) because the 50 gal is not available for shipping.
Currently a conventional electric water heater 50 gal with first hour 62 gpm rating serves our showering (which i think is the highest flow requirement) needs in the morning, so can I assume this 40 gal will do the trick for us because the first-hour gpm rating is comparable?

Only the federal rebate applies for me, so after the 300 rebate, plus tax and shipping, this hybrid runs me $500. Our current conventional electric heater is 16 years old (functions fine) -- the sticker on it says it costs 410$ or so to run per year. Other posters here are saying this heater saves them $20/month -- if i get similar benefits, in two years, the heater pays for itself. Is this a reasonable assumption -- ie. would it make sense to replace my heater simply from savings standpoint?

I'm clueless in this arena, so huge thanks to OP for the deal and to everyone who's posted their thoughts in this thread.

I picked up the 50 gallon for delivery right at noon eastern time. 699. With shipping and tax it was just over 800. Can't wait. Old one still works but at 18 years old I don't really trust it.

I had been looking at heat pump water heaters for some time but hadn't pulled the trigger yet due to cost. So happy with this deal! Thanks!

I'm trying to order this exact same 40 gallon version and the price keeps changing when I check out either through logging into my account or when I try to pay through paypal without logging in. Any insight? What store zip code did you use?

Did you log in with your account? I tried to log in and pay with paypal and both times the price reverted back to full price before I could complete checkout.

Thank you, I will keep trying. Did you select the shipping option before you added the item to your cart?
