You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.
It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.
Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.
back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

All you people out there who are considering buying from the store, here's the breakdown of the charges:
So, they are billing the phone at $399 and so you will pay a tax of around $30 (depends on your state) just there and then discount it using two codes (I don't know even if we get these two codes, will we be able to order online at the same price.) Then, $25 activation fee, $8 service plan protection (have no clue what this is but the girl said she cannot remove it).
Phone: $49.99 + $30(Tax) = $79.99
Service: $60
Service Plan Protection: $8 + $1.84(Tax for Plan) = $9.84
Activation Fee: $25+$1.88(Tax) = $26.88
Total: $176.71
Requirements:
First thing store rep will ask is your ID.
Store rep will use that ID to fill in all the details.
Then the porting number, account detail, and pin.
And, it is a requirement for them to open the phone, insert the sim, and call to the store number. The girl there just messed up the phone. You cannot walk out with the new box, it seems.
That's it. Even though I bought it, I am thinking of returning it. There is no point in paying $176.71 just to flip for $20-$30 or so.
Thanks for sharing, this is very helpful and save a lot of people a trip to store at this pandemic.

You still paid well below market value for a new iphone SE, so you came out ahead in the end.
You also took initiative in real life when everyone else (including myself) was too lazy to visit a Cricket store. Taking initiative is a rare and valuable skill to have.
As for what to do - sell the phone locally on offerup or facebook marketplace (as a previous poster suggested). Or keep the phone and use it as a Wifi-enabled camera/video camera.
I make videos for a living and without totally giving away the secret sauce...let's just say you can get creative enough with an iphone to record, edit & market professional videos. Either for youtube or local businesses. You'll eventually earn back your original investment x1000.
Edit: Here's something else to note. I would contact cricket CS and give them hell about your local store charging a $30 tax based on the full retail price of the iPhone SE. You were charged a $30 tax on a $49 sales price. I can almost guarantee you can have this charge removed by raising hell. I'm not even sure if what your local cricket store did was legal.
Both of mine worked but after inserting many times the phone showed "no sim". To fix this I put the rsim in the tray and the sim I wanted to use on top. Then flipped it upside down and lightly pushed on each contact with my finger nail while holding the sim in from the other side.
I never had to go to settings. The menu just popped up.
Ok, I found the post that helped me. See below......

FINALLY got rsim to work and unlock the phone, currently using it on liberty wireless.
Turns out the first rsim I ordered was bad or outdated, so I returned that and ordered a new one from a different source. Poof immediately it was recognized and screen popped out for iccid change.
Here are what I have learned through the past two weeks.
1. No Sim error if you insert sim card with rsim - this is likely due to the faulty design of the rsim. Grab a pen with ball point, not sharp point and pinch the six hole/indendations, this way the chip will make solid contact with your sim card.
2. No pop up screen from rsim, bring the rsim with sim to an older iphone, hopefully it'll pop up now. If not, go to setting - cellular - sim application and change iccid there. Remember, you're changing iccid on the rsim. Another approach for those without another phone, pop rsim with cricket sim in the new iphone se and change iccid from setting - cellular - sim application. (note:If you don't see sim application in setting - cellular, you likely have a bad rsim chip, I'd return it and get a new one.) I struggled for a week with a bad rsim and thought someone was wrong. sigh.
3. ICCID - the latest iccid is NOT on gevey store, it's on https://beta.unlockcode
