The 779 is the same saw for $200 less than the 780, plus you get the mobile stand. For $60-80 you can add the light (which most people don't even use) to make it the same exact saw. This is a good deal.

Would this or a portable table saw be a better choice as a first saw for standard home DIY projects?
Table saw; but also consider the lowly circular saw.

Miter saws are really only for cross cuts, for example cutting the end off a 2x4, or cutting moulding or flooring to the right length. You can also cut angles which is handy for crown molding or angled flooring or decks.

Portable table saws do better at rip cuts than cross cuts for larger pieces, meaning cutting a length of wood into thinner pieces. For example, a 2x4 into a 2x2. Yes you can also cut the off the ends like with a miter saw, but really only with smaller pieces.

Circular saws get a bad rap. They are more capable then most people realize. I'm using mine more and more. Just sold my miter saw. For my work a circular saw or table saw sled was better. FWIW my table saw is a smaller Dewalt.

The foureyes channel on YouTube just did a segment on miter saws. IMO the only reason to have one is to cut molding or angled flooring, or certain other specialty cuts most people don't deal with. Maybe precision cuts on long sections of 4x4 or 6x6.

A table saw is MUCH more versatile than a miter saw. A table saw can do virtually everything that a miter saw can do, along with a whole lot more.

Unless you've got a big trim install project in you future, I'd definitely go with the table saw.

I'll give a different opinion. A circular saw with a guide, either a store bought or a jig you make and a miter saw will provide you with nearly everything you need. When you consider safety, which should be primary concern of anyone just starting out in this hobby or profession, etc, the circular and miter saws are far safer with proper attention. IMHO

Have you checked into that? There seems to be a suggestion that that was a misconception that has been perpetuated. With the 780 being a completely different beast.

Here's a link to YouTube showing how to do it. I believe they did an update to the saw in 2018 so not all can receive the light. Though both of mine (home + work) were the correct model to upgrade. I upgraded the work one.

Two of my local Lowe's have both on display, yours may too. I recommend you go compare them.

This is a great miter saw. I picked one up a few years ago for ~$300 without stand.
It relegated the old miter saw (Craftsman non-sliding compound) to chop saw status due to the increase in precision, function and usability.
