What issues are you having on Android TV? I'm using it on Roku, Fire and Samsung TV with no issues. Some minor hiccups here and there but nothing major.
From what I hear Roku doesn't have nearly as many issues, but I'm not willing to give up my Shields.

The main issues I had were with time shifting and freezing. If you try to pause live tv for more than 5 minutes then you lose the stream (it'll play for about a minute and then freeze). That one alone was pretty much a deal breaker for me.
If you've been watching for a while and rewind a bit to a previous show then the ff/rr controls start taking you to random places in the timeline.
They give you options to auto-delete a show after X number of episodes have been recorded which doesn't actually do anything.
I think they finally fixed this one, but over the summer it would freeze at :03 past the hour, every hour. Combine that one with trying to troubleshoot potential signal issues for an extremely frustrating experience.

Question for the people with synology Nas. Is plex better than the synology video station app? I don't mind spending the money on plex if it's worth it. Looks like the same features as synology.

Plex is free. If you need these things [plex.tv], then you pay for the Plex Pass.

Several of the movies are 15-20+ years old and have commercials.

Exchange rate must have changed. I just purchased using the Brazil trick and my Costco Citi Visa shows I was charged $71.11.

PLEXINC*PASS LIFETIME LOS GATOS US $71.11

Still, can't really complain over $1 increase.

I'm not even sure I'll use Plex...I just know I must have it when I saw the deal. Plex seems to be the King of home media servers. Right now I'm using Playon on a lifetime sub, however, the enhanced media cataloging seems the main benefit of Plex. I also have a Tablo and will look into how to use it with Plex.

I see this deal pop up a couple times a year and I consider it for a few minutes before thinking how I don't think I would actually use it to justify the cost.

When people say live TV, what does that mean? There are legit TV channels that are available for free to watch? What other useful things does Plex pass offer than regular Plex doesn't?
The Live TV + DVR thing is exactly what it sounds like. If you have a PC or network TV tuner (the most common ones nowadays are the SiliconDust HDHomeRun products), you can record OTA TV or cable (if you have an HDHRPrime). Thus, you turn your PMS (terrible acronym) into your own personal DVR and slingbox.

Since I have Plex Pass and a few tuners, I can now watch TV anywhere I have internet service. I can also watch any show that I've recorded. It's pretty handy, especially for travel. For example, I can be on the west coast and still watch my local Boston sports teams. Technically, as long as you have the bandwidth and a good enough server, you could split a cable subscription with friends and family. You get cable (and the server and tuners), you set up everyone else as friends who can access your Live TV + DVR, and then they can watch cable through Plex and only need to pay for their own internet subscriptions.

There are a few other perks to Plex Pass as well.

General PSA: A few weeks ago, they fixed the Live TV bug which caused the show to restart when the next show was beginning. You can technically watch Live TV 24/7 again.

FYI, as of just now (8:01pm, PST), this deal was still active. I didn't try the Brazil trick, but I did get the $89 lifetime pass. Good luck!

you can try Plex for free on Synology packages. The free version does everything Video Station can do with better organization and MUCH better UI.

I just bought it also. I see $71.11 in my pending charges as well. I bought it for BRL 374.99 which the currency converter said it would be $70.36. Chase said that there is a 3% foreign transaction fee so I am not sure how it came to $71.11.

I'm not sure where you're getting this idea from but it's simply not true. Plex does not support DRM, and practically every cable company in America encrypt their signals these days. The only Live TV you're going to get with Plex is your local channels over an antenna. The only way you're going to do this with cable is if you're one of the few lucky ones who's provider actually doesn't encrypt the channels, which isn't going to apply to 99.9% of people.

I'm pretty sure you can't run them side-by-side for comparison though, right? I thought Syno Plex and Video Station don't play nicely together in the sandbox if you point them at the same video collection.

Personally, I've never tried Video Station because I already got my family trained to use Plex. Retraining them would be way too much effort at this point.

Unless something changed VERY recently, that's not true. I had cable until a few months ago. Comcast. I have an HDHRPrime and a cable card. I would watch TV remotely often. I would also record TV and watch the recordings remotely.
