Sign up for the hotspot from:
https://www.t-mobile.com/offers/free-trial
Use your 30 days / 30GB free data
Unlock the hotpot:
SIM Unlock
While exploring the binary at /usr/bin/QCMAP_Web_CLIENT, I accidentally stumbled upon the logic used to SIM Unlock the device. To generate your SIM unlock code, just use the following below in any Linux or Mac Terminal.
export IMEI=YOURIMEIGOESHERE echo -n "${IMEI}simlock" | sha1sum | cut -c1-8
In the above, replace YOURIMEIGOESHERE with the IMEI number of the T9 Hotspot. Once done, you can enter the generated code into the Web UI to unlock the device for all SIM cards.
All credit for the unlocking goes to snt.sh. Would paste the direct link bur for some reason my link pasting capabilities seems to have been screwed up.

(do not forget to replace with your IMEI#)

2. No. You should use the free 30 day/30 GB as soon as possible, using the SIM you get with the kit. Then, after that is done (30 days or 30 GB, whichever is first), you'll need to add/get a data SIM.
3. You'll need a data SIM ...... after unlocking the device you'll be able to use a data SIM from any carrier. A voice SIM will not work on any wifi hotspot device, no matter the carrier.
(The purpose of you/us doing all this is to get a free wifi hotspot device .... the purpose of T Mo giving you/us a wifi hotspot device is to test-drive their network, so it's a marketing gimmick that SDers are flipping into a freebie)
EDIT/ADD:
Another SDer commented that my #3 is not correct .... so, too be fair, here's a reprint of their Comment, with my Reply:
I've put my T Mo SIM into a T Mo puck ... nothing came through.
That SIM had a plan with data and tethering.
...... could be "Then" and not today?
That was back with my S3 ..... 4 years ago, I guess?
I'll edit my original Comment with your Comment here 👍
Thank you for writing-in

No. It just showed up. I actually thought it was something from another order. It was fast. 2 days maybe?
Worth a try anyway if you are on Mint Mobile but when I tried to sign up using my Mint number, it said it was for new customers only. then I tried again with my tracfone att number and got the same error.
Curious whether this happened because I am on Mint or because before I was on Mint I was on Teltik (which is a TMO business reseller). Could be the latter -- it's been two months since I left them -- except the site actually says TMO business customers are eligible.
(I don't mind losing out on the Hotspot, but not happy this means I'm ineligible for new customer plan offers since I am planning to leave Mint when my three months are up).

Once you ssh into the device:
You can generate the unlock code directly on the device — use this command (all 1 line)
/var/volatile/www/htdocs/cgi-bin/webpst.imei_mac.cgi | awk '/imei/{printf( substr($2,2,15) "simlock")}'|sha1sum|cut -c1-8
Do they send tracking number?

UPS sends you tracking for all packages destined for your address, if you sign up on their website. Thats how I got notified.

It's not as cryptic or magical as people are making it sound.
They used a simple math function to hide the unlock code derived from the IMEI, itself. Kind of like those little plastic spy decoder rings that you had as a child.
Its simple. Take your IMEI right off the sticker. It's printed right on the device.
Add the word "simlock" to the end. So if your IMEI says 1234567890 on the sticker, the top secret magical impossible to figure out secret code would be 1234567890simlock
Crazy difficult, right? It's like in the movie Space balls when the secret code to the planet's shield was 1, 2, 3, 4..... (wait for it... what is the last digit going to be...?)... 5.
So now that you've hacked the secrets of the universe, you put the top secret 1234567890simlock into any of the thousands of a SHA-1 calculators on the web. Bear in mind, this requires you to not only have a right hand to move your mouse, but also requires you to have fingers to press keys on your keyboard, too, which is something very few human beings have.
If you were one of the three human beings on earth born with fingers and a brain big enough to copy a number off a sticker and tack on "simlock" to the end, then you are presented with a hash of jumbled characters.
But that's not all! They throw one more sneaky trap to foil your efforts! Only the first EIGHT digits of the hash are the ones you want. You just ignore the rest! But good luck finding a person that can count to eight. I tried, and I could only count to four before I gave up.
Guys, this isn't rocket science. The people who struggle with unlocking this are the same people who don't know what to fill in for "zip code" on an address form.
You don't need SSH or to type complicated commands in. You look at the sticker and type the IMEI plus the word simlock without a space into a SHA-1 generator on the web and copy and paste the first 8 characters it spits out.
Most devices in existence factory reset with the 30-30-30 method. Everyone should learn this.
While on, press and hold the reset button (usually a pinhole with a paperclip) for 30 seconds.
Without releasing the reset button, pull power (and battery if present) and wait 30 seconds.
Still not releasing the reset button, plug power back in and wait 30 seconds before finally releasing the reset button which you've should have been holding in for the entire minute and a half, if you did it right.
Once you ssh into the device:
You can generate the unlock code directly on the device — use this command (all 1 line)
/var/volatile/www/htdocs/cgi-bin/webpst.imei_mac.cgi | awk '/imei/{printf( substr($2,2,15) "simlock")}'|sha1sum|cut -c1-8
Oh, wait I think it finally unlocked. I tried a third generator and it gave me a correct code.
