This is it. Micron memory, Micron controller, no rebranding w/ cheaper components, no funny business. Just fast, reliable storage at a great price.
I was gonna wait for a good Gen4 deals, but by the time direct storage actually becomes a thing, there will be better drives at better prices anyway. I don't think any of the budget Gen4 options are worth a 50% markup over this, and I doubt they will go the distance the way this drive will.
Intel 660p 1TB was around $79 last year. We have been stuck at 1-2TB for a year now as Samsung + Micron + SK Hynix collude to milk the consumer. Now that theres a glut of DRAM and NAND unless you absolutely need a SSD prices will continue to drop.
SSDs are now much easier and cheaper to make than mechanical HDs and those are apporaching 40-50TB. Meanwhile in SSD land the consumer is geeting a sequoia tree shoved up where the sun dont shine.
Pro: Warranty is 5 years or 1200 TBW (whichever comes first)
Cons: QLC flash instead of TLC. No DRAM cache.
Pass.
This is Crucial p5, not p2 or p1.
NAND type is TLC, NOT QLC.
And it has a DRAM. Not quite a Samsung Evo 970 but it is up there at this price range. Pretty good price.

A Micron rep in the Amazon Q&A for this part says its QLC. I couldn't find the information on a data sheet. I don't have any reason to doubt you, but I don't have any reason to doubt the vendor rep either.
I really wish vendors would provide complete specs on the data sheet. :/
Exact dilemma I have today. I have a P31 for my boot, this would be a second. Don't know whether I want them to match (2 x P31) or not (one P31 and one P5) which would let me use some of my BB GC and points.
P31 on benchmarks is almost universally better than the P5, but in real life it likely doesn't matter much.

Is the P31 worth the extra few bucks or should I get the crucial for a new gaming rig?

Neither is a bad option honestly. Mine is a gaming rig too. I got the P31 for 114 a bit ago. If they were the same price and availability for you, I'd choose P31. But it is a few bucks higher, at least right now.

Well it doesn't help that they kept changing the series name and not being consistent
MX500, BX500, P1, P2, P5
There's 2.5" and m.2 MX500
P1 P2 P5 are not all QLC
Even samsung confused me at first with 860 evo having 2.5" and m.2 =_=
